New funding opportunities for grassroots sport
Breaking Down Barriers To Rural Sport
Sport England’s Investment Fund will officially launch on the 1st April 2009 and will support grassroots sport through a series of themed rounds that tackle key challenges.
The first funding period will focus on removing the barriers faced by people in rural areas who wish to take part in sporting activities, such as a reduced choice of activities and difficulties with transport.
The government agency hopes its new fund will empower councils, local sports clubs and community groups to break down these barriers to participation and enhance local residents’ sporting opportunities. Grants worth upwards of £10,000 will be available once the scheme is up and running, with Sport England encouraging high value, high impact projects that will require funding in excess of £500,000.
The rural communities funding round is expected to run for three months from 1 April, with a second priority area identified for a future application period during the autumn.
From April this year, the body will run a series of new programmes with the aim of increasing sporting participation, particularly amongst children and young people.
Along with the Investment Fund, Sport England will also establish a £7 million Small Grants Fund offering local groups cash injections ranging from £300 to £10,000, a £3 million match fund to encourage additional private sector investment, and a £5 million Innovation Fund to test and develop new ways of promoting grassroots sport.
Further details about the new fund will be posted on 1 April 09 at www.sportengland.org
Sportsmatch 2009/10 Funding Round Sportsmatch is funded by Sport England to support the development of grassroots sport and applications are now being encouraged for 2009/10 financial year.
The minimum award available for 2009/10 will be £1,000 (£500 for schools) and the maximum will be £100,000 or £25,000 capital grants for equipment projects. The minimum partnership funding of £1,000 (or £500) must come from one eligible source - a number of businesses/trusts/individuals cannot club together to make up the minimum sponsorship.
The scheme is open to community based sports projects, in particular those that benefit young people, disability groups, black and minority ethnic groups and/or women and girls.
An organisation seeking sponsorship should be a properly constituted organising body involved in sport. This includes governing bodies, sports clubs, charities, local authorities, schools/colleges and voluntary youth organisations.
Applications can now be made on the Sportsmatch website, http://www.sportsmatch.co.uk/index.html help available over a dedicated telephone line.
A new application will go live on 1 April 2009.

The netball festival, now in its seventh year, compromised of 20 primary school high five netball teams representing each school sport partnership across Staffordshire competing to become Staffordshire County High Five Champions. Boys and girls in years 5 and 6 participated in the festival, which showcased the best high five netball talent in the county.
The afternoon began with a series of fixtures. Teams were placed into four sections compromising of five teams per section. Young leaders who had achieved the young netball organiser’s award put their skills to the test with some officiating and scoring under the supervision of volunteers from the Staffordshire County Netball Association.

St Stephen’s primary school (Burntwood and Lichfield) came prepared with questions ready to ask Sinclair and St Thomas Tean (Staffordshire Moorlands) set a challenge for Sinclair by asking him to shoot a goal with no backboard and with a high five netball! Two years into retirement and he still didn’t miss!
After the question and answer session by Sinclair Thomas the knockout rounds began until there were two finalists.
The final was a close battle, both teams very tired after a full afternoon of netball but both still striving to win the competition. Codsall Middle School led the first half but St Mary’s fought back in the second and when the final whistle went both teams were drawing 2 – 2. The final went into extra time of two minutes each way; St Mary’s coming out as champions winning the final 5 – 2.

Cannock and Rugeley Netball Competition
Year 5 & 6 pupils got the chance to take part in the first Partnership High Five competition as part of the Cannock and Rugeley School Sport Partnership competition calendar. Over 80 young pupils from 10 primary schools, and 15 students from the Leadership Academy took part in a 2 ½ competition at Rugeley Leisure Centre.
Each school battled through 4 league games until a nail biting final crowning St Marys of Cannock the winners and St Luke’s the runners up. Not even poor weather conditions could hold back the event with a last minute decision to move indoors and with some creative use of courts that enabled the competition to go ahead.
Lucy Stevenson PDM said “The tournament was a great success with all teams getting into the spirit of competition, supporting other schools and enjoying themselves. The Young Leaders have been fantastic and the event couldn’t have run without them. This is a great event that we are planning to hold annually”.
The winners represented the Cannock and Rugeley School Sport Partnership at the Staffordshire High Five Netball Final on the 16th March at Fenton Manor.
The High Five Netball competition was run in conjunction with Lucy Stevenson PDM, Nigel Camacho Competition Manager and Emma Warren Netball Development Officer.

In 2005 Dave Ford invited four teams, Meir Heath, Little Stoke, Leek and Milford Hall to form the first ever girls-only cricket league in Staffordshire. This league has now grown to sixteen teams with divisions throughout the County and is now administered by the South Moorlands Junior Cricket League.
To attract girls of different ages and abilities Dave decided the format would be Inter-Cricket and allowed girls up to the age of fifteen to take part although the average age of the players is actually about eleven.
The success of this league has necessitated the recruitment of more players into the clubs from schools and in Dave's capacity as Community Cricket Coach for Stoke-on-Trent and the Moorlands, working for both the North Stoke Schools Partnership and the Staffordshire Cricket Board he set up a Girls Cricket Academy at the new Indoor Cricket Facility at Sandon High School in February 2008.
The idea behind this Academy was to offer cricket coaching by E.C.B. accredited coaches to girls from schools in North Staffordshire and then offer them the opportunity to join local cricket clubs where they could compete in the Girls Inter-Cricket League during the cricket season.
In its inaugural year the Academy attracted sixteen girls and with the continued support and funding from the North Stoke Schools Partnership we have increased participation so that this year there are as many as twenty girls attending from at least seven different schools within the Stoke-On-Trent and Moorlands area of North Staffordshire.
The Staffordshire Cricket Board successfully organised the inaugural Asda Kwik Cricket competition for girls last season, led by Alison Grimley and two schools form the North of the County, St.Lukes (Endon) and Carmountside Primary (Abbey Hulton), made it to the Staffordshire finals which were held at Moddershall Cricket Club.
One girl from Carmountside Primary school Emily Corden took up the invitation to join the Academy last year and was then invited to join the girls team at Meir Heath Cricket Club where she received weekly coaching from accredited E.C.B. coaches and competed in the club’s Girls Inter-Cricket team in the Moorlands Girls league.

Ability Counts Awareness Programme
Staffordshire Football Association and Stoke City FC held their annual Ability Counts Awareness Campaign from Monday 16th March through to Wednesday 25th March 2009 at the Britannia Stadium.
Over 100 children with disabilities and impairments from Special Schools in the County attended and supported the campaign.
Each school were invited to receive a free coaching session each from Staffordshire FA’s Disability Football Coach in the Stoke City Academy Dome and then were given an access all areas tour of The Britannia Stadium including the managerial football lounge, home team dressing room, pitch side, Jimmy Greenhoff Suite which hosts the trophy cabinet with the tour coming to an end in the Stanley Matthews Lounge, a suite dedicated to the Stoke City and England legend.
Lindsay Leighton, Disability Liaison Officer at Stoke City said: “The students that have attended have really enjoyed themselves. Each student was encouraged to participate fully in the day and hopefully we are promoting Disability Football to the next generation of Ability Counts League players.”
On the 19th March the County hosted its 1st ever Powerchair / Wheelchair football taster session in conjunction with Able 2 United from Burton, a club that play in the Staffordshire Ability Counts League. The session helped gauge the level of interest but also offered players the opportunity to improve their technique as well as picking up new skills in a fun filled environment.
The campaign is held annually to raise awareness and to promote disability football as well as offering the people a chance to experience a football environment at close hand, with some of the schools being lucky enough to meet 1st team players during their tours.
The week’s main event was the Barclays Premier League fixture between Stoke City and Middlesbrough. On the Scoreboard before the game the crowd were treated to Aynsley School using BSL to sign the words to the famous terrace anthem ‘Delilah’ before being presented with their winner’s trophies from the Staffordshire FA’s Special Schools Tournament. The presentation was made by England Blind footballer and GB Paralympian Lee Greatbatch. Lee was the campaigns guest of honour and both Stoke City FC and Staffordshire FA are very grateful for his involvement and support towards the campaign. Half time of the day’s main event saw Stoke City Ability Counts FC entertain Middlesbrough Soccability FC in a well contested exhibition match that ended 1-1.
Jamie Leaning, Staffordshire FA’s Disability Coach said “The campaign is devoted to giving people an insight into disability football opportunities within the county and also what Stoke City as a club can offer.
Many students with disabilities are sceptical about getting into sport for a variety of reasons. Some may be in classes or in a mainstream school that is not able to offer support for their personal needs so may miss out so this event is perfect to highlight the available opportunities.”
If you would like any more information about getting involved in disabled football, please contact Jamie Leaning on 01785 256994, 07800619884 or email jamie.leaning@staffordshirefa.com

Talent spotting in Staffordshire Moorlands
All schools were asked to identify Gifted & Talented pupils and the School Sport Coordinator visited the school to assess the group through a series of tasks. From this an initial group pupils were sent to a 'moderation' session where the pupils were put into small groups from a selection of schools.
Pupils were assessed using the ‘Talent Matters’ programme focusing on 5 areas:
The result was that a group of 30 pupils were identified as Gifted & Talented.
During February half-term, the 30 pupils were invited to 3 sessions held at Biddulph Sports College, these were led by ASM Sports. Pupils here worked on a selection of skills:
Judging from the pupil evaluations the whole event was very popular. All the pupils left the event with a goodie bag and verbal feedback. Following the sessions, parents received written feedback and an invitation to the second phase which will take place in the Easter holidays at the Sports Hall for Cheadle Schools. After the Easter holidays event, the group will be taken to Fenton Manor to watch International Table Tennis.

Cash joy for young disabled trampoline fans
Young trampolinists with disabilities will be bouncing for joy after Cannock Chase Council helped to secure thousands of pounds to boost access to the popular sport.
The Council’s Sports Development Team worked with the G-Force Trampoline and Gymnastics Club to secure £9,000 that will be spent on specialist equipment for special sessions for youngsters with disabilities at Chase and Rugeley leisure centres.
The cash will pay for specialist equipment, including specialist trampolines and large foam steps, as well as funding to allow young people with disabilities to attend sessions free of charge.
The trampolining sessions for youngsters with disabilities take place on Mondays at Chase Leisure Centre and Fridays at Rugeley Leisure Centre from 5.45pm. to 6.45pm. Call Deborah Pearce from the Sports Development Team on 01543 425996 for more information. A range of other trampoline classes are also on offer.
An event is to be held at Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock on 18 April, called Going for Gold, that celebrates all the work that is taking place to encourage young people with disabilities and other access issues in Cannock Chase. It is open to all young people and their families and will include trampolining, football, rock climbing, archery, inflatables and lots of other fun activities. The day also aims to raise awareness of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and to inspire young people with disabilities to get involved in sport.
Who knows, a future paralympic hero just may come from Cannock Chase.
Councillor Neil Stanley, Cannock Chase Council Leader, said: “The Council is working hard to widen access to sporting opportunities for all Cannock Chase residents, whatever their needs. The trampoline club is one superb example of this and I am delighted at the £9,000 they have been able to attract. I would like to congratulate everyone involved."

Playing for success
The celebrations of the Play East Staffs Partnership were held at Branston Golf Course on Thursday 5th March, marking a successful year of achievement for children’s play in the Borough. The partnership launched its play strategy last year, vowing to give young people the opportunity to access play for free, as well as being free to come and go and free to choose what to do.
Following the successful application of a Big Lottery grant and the support of Play England, five projects have been launched including the Tutbury Teens play area, Unity Park, Staffordshire County Council’s Toy Library, Stafford Playaway Scrap and the introduction of Satellite Playdays in Barton, Rocester and Uttoxeter adding to the already fantastic Playday event, organised by Jane Wells.
Cllr Bernard Peters, Deputy Leader for Health and Leisure and proud Play Champion got proceedings underway. Cllr Peters said the ‘work had been outstanding’ and the issues around play remained, ‘hosting the conference has brought together the right partners to take the work into year 2 of the strategy’. Cllr Peters also recognised what the importance play has on both physical and mental health and development.
Simeon Packard, invited key speaker and founder of Play Solutions Consultants, gave an inspiring presentation looking at how communities can come together to develop play in their areas. Simeon gave examples from other areas of England as well as reflecting on visits he had made to other European countries such as Denmark. He insists that play doesn’t have to mean swings and slides and that there is a great natural environment that lends itself to free play opportunities, it just takes a bit of imagination he concluded.
The third part of the conference celebrated in style the year’s achievements in a ‘chat show’ style presentation. ‘Chat Show host’, Vicki Brearley, Head of Sport, Physical Health and Community Development for East Staffordshire Borough Council interviewed guests that had contributed to the development and implementation of the East Staffs Play Strategy, bringing back old friends such as Charles Dean, who hand delivered the Big Lottery Play Application and other partners including Staffordshire Wildlife, Play Partnership Chairman, Duncan Cowie, South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust and Janet Dean MP who also chairs the All Parties Parliamentary Play Council.
The delegates finally sat in workgroups to look at the challenges for the forthcoming year, and committed to attending the next partnership meeting on Weds 29th April, 2.00 pm at the Children’s Centre, Burton upon Trent, before Cllr Kathy Lamb, Chair of East Staffs District Children’s Trust gave a farewell speech and shared her thoughts on how we should bring back the ‘joy’ of play and free time.

Junior netball makes an impact in East Staffordshire
March 2009 saw the first junior netball league for girls aged 11 - 14. The competition included teams from Burton and the local boroughs competing out on the court to become winners of the first ever Burton and District junior netball league. With some intense and highly competitive netball being played, it was a great showcase of local netball talent and a great opportunity for young girls to become involved with netball outside of school.
Junior Netball League Runners-up Belvedere Juniors
Parents, teachers and coaches lined the sports hall to encourage and motivate the young netball athletes. It is hoped that netball clubs involved in the Burton & District adult league will consider the benefits of a junior section and take on board the importance of junior netball in East Staffordshire so that we can inspire more young girls to stay in sport and become inspirational athletes like the local netball star, former England Captain, Olivia Murphy.
Junior Netball League in action
Presenting the awards was Regional Talent Coach, Loughborough Lightning coach and former Scotland International coach, Rosie Port. The Winners were King Eddies Junior Netball Club and Runners-up Belvedere Juniors Netball Club.
Emma Warren, Netball Development Officer for Staffordshire and The Black Country said: "The event was a triumph and I would like to thank East Staffordshire School Sport Partnership, the volunteers and supporters for making it such a success."

Kick for Children with Cancer is back for 2009!
CLIC Sargent are urging Staffordshire football clubs and schools to help raise funds for children with cancer and their own football team this summer .
Organised by local schools and clubs, Kick for Children with Cancer events run throughout May to July and encourage kids to be active by getting them involved in penalty shoot-outs, skills classes and tournaments where they're sponsored to take part.
Every day in the UK, 10 families are told their child has cancer or leukaemia. 75% of the money raised by Kick for Children with Cancer will be used by the charity to provide ongoing care and support for those children and their families. The schools and clubs taking part will be able to keep the remaining 25% of the money they raise to use on their own local initiatives.
Organising a Kick for Children with Cancer event is simple. All the fundraising materials that teachers or club leaders need are provided, right down to the footballs! The event can easily fit in with the National Curriculum, with downloadable lesson plans online. Or if you're a club or team, organising a fun event can really liven up a training session!
