SE research – with WM focus

A summary of Sport England's research, containing links to specific data and information for the West Midlands, is provided below by Rachel O’Reilly. In the absence of a performance analyst in the region, as Rachel leaves SEWM to take a new post with the NH at based at Warwick University, she thought it would be a useful reference point for all our regional partners.

SEWM website ceasing
News item from the SE West Midlands’ site:

'West Midlands' web pages will change in March
The regional section of the Sport England website will cease to exist from mid-March; this is in readiness for the development of a new website that will project the organisation’s new strategic direction. There will however, be a page on the main site where you can find key information on the regional office, including all contact details.

We hope that over the years you have found our pages of value and they have informed you on developments and news in the West Midlands. We would also like to thank all our partners who have provided information to support the content of our web pages.’

Please note that the majority of the regional pages have been removed in readiness for closure and there being just one regional page on the main SE website.

Please be aware that if your website carries links to the SEWM site you must check these and remove accordingly.

Counties’ Link closure

You are all aware of the changes that are being made to the staffing structure of Sport England to bring it in-line to effectively deliver the aims outlined in the strategy that was launched in June 2008. The re-structuring has resulted in a smaller team based in the region, which means that certain functions have been focussed on central delivery teams; the communication role is one such function that falls into this category.

Jenny Warner hopes that over the years the information she has provided has been a valuable communication tool for you. She would also like to thank all partners for the information they contributed, this has helped to make it a truly regional service and your support has been really valued.

Partners are urged to sign up to receive some of the information newsletters, both sub regional and national, that will support your work in the future. They are as follows:

Audit Commission CPA report

Final score - The impact of the Comprehensive Performance Assessment of local government 2002-08. AC, 5 March 2009.

This report marks the end of the Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) and looks back over its seven years. Final Score considers the impact CPA has had on improving council services, governance and financial management since it was first introduced in 2002.

The explanation on pages 7-8 relating to the transition from CPA to CAA is very informative for people who do not work closely with this subject area.

CPA article re Audit Commission report

Seven-year itch from the CPA
Michael Burton

The CPA had a huge impact on council service delivery, not to mention political and managerial careers. Michael Burton looks at today’s report from the Audit Commission analysing the success of the seven-year regime which has now ended.

Like it or loathe it, the CPA has made its mark on local government services, created and destroyed careers, and had an impact on performance arguably far greater than its architects originally envisaged when they looked for a successor to best value…………………………………………
