Staffordshire County High Five netball festival 2009

The netball festival, now in its seventh year, compromised of 20 primary school high five netball teams representing each school sport partnership across Staffordshire competing to become Staffordshire County High Five Champions. Boys and girls in years 5 and 6 participated in the festival, which showcased the best high five netball talent in the county.

The afternoon began with a series of fixtures. Teams were placed into four sections compromising of five teams per section. Young leaders who had achieved the young netball organiser’s award put their skills to the test with some officiating and scoring under the supervision of volunteers from the Staffordshire County Netball Association.

Sporting Champions

Sporting Champion, Sinclair Thomas paralympic bronze medallist in wheelchair basketball, was guest at the event and provided a question and answer session for all participants, teachers and supporters. St Stephen’s primary school (Burntwood and Lichfield) came prepared with questions ready to ask Sinclair and St Thomas Tean (Staffordshire Moorlands) set a challenge for Sinclair by asking him to shoot a goal with no backboard and with a high five netball! Two years into retirement and he still didn’t miss!

After the question and answer session by Sinclair Thomas the knockout rounds began until there were two finalists.

The final was a close battle, both teams very tired after a full afternoon of netball but both still striving to win the competition. Codsall Middle School led the first half but St Mary’s fought back in the second and when the final whistle went both teams were drawing 2 – 2. The final went into extra time of two minutes each way; St Mary’s coming out as champions winning the final 5 – 2.
