Talent spotting in Staffordshire Moorlands

All schools were asked to identify Gifted & Talented pupils and the School Sport Coordinator visited the school to assess the group through a series of tasks. From this an initial group pupils were sent to a 'moderation' session where the pupils were put into small groups from a selection of schools.

Pupils were assessed using the ‘Talent Matters’ programme focusing on 5 areas:

  • Cognitive
  • Physical
  • Personal
  • Social
  • Creative

The result was that a group of 30 pupils were identified as Gifted & Talented.

Talent Spotting in Staffordshire Moorlands

During February half-term, the 30 pupils were invited to 3 sessions held at Biddulph Sports College, these were led by ASM Sports. Pupils here worked on a selection of skills:

  • Movement
  • Catching
  • Speed Reaction
  • Ball Manipulation (hands only)
  • Throwing
  • Throwing & Jumping
  • Racket Skills
  • Speed.

Judging from the pupil evaluations the whole event was very popular. All the pupils left the event with a goodie bag and verbal feedback. Following the sessions, parents received written feedback and an invitation to the second phase which will take place in the Easter holidays at the Sports Hall for Cheadle Schools. After the Easter holidays event, the group will be taken to Fenton Manor to watch International Table Tennis.
