Thursday 18th March saw the 23rd East Staffordshire Sports Scholarship Awards take place at Burton Albion – Pirelli Stadium. During the evening 41 elite performers across 19 different sports from within East Staffordshire were awarded with a Sports Scholarship for their outstanding achievements during 2009. All recipients have achieved regional standard or above in their sport. All the Scholarship Award winners received a grant, and a free training pass for all East Staffordshire Borough Council Leisure facilities.
The grants distributed amounted to over £10,000, and this was only made possible due to the continued support of the following sponsors, East Staffordshire Borough Council, East Staffordshire Sports Council, Branston Golf & Country Club, Consolidated Charities of Burton upon Trent, Burton Albion, J&O Lloyd Trust and Coors.
The evening also saw the Branston Golf & Country Club Sports Personality of the Year Awarded to Katie Long; a local Hockey Player who is a current member of the Great Britain Women’s Squad training at Bisham Abbey, a Gold medallist at the Youth Olympic festival and won a Bronze medal at the European cup.

WASP Funding Packs a Punch for Local Sports Club
The gloves are off at the Burton Amateur Boxing Club (BABC) after they received a knockout grant from Horninglow ward member Councillor Julian Mott to pay for new equipment.
The £1,000 Ward Action Service Plan (WASP) grant has enabled the boxing club to buy new equipment like punch bag covers, lightweight boxing mitts, speed skipping ropes, sparing pads and hand wraps.
This extra equipment will mean the popular club can open its doors to more young people and adults in an attempt to increase membership.
Councillor Mott said: “The BABC is proving to be an important part of the community and is going from strength to strength.
“It is a great place for people of all ages to get fit, meet new people and learn a new skill, and I am happy to be able to use my WASP funding allocation to help the club buy the equipment that can help members improve their fitness and performance.”
The BABC is currently using extra fitness equipment from the Meadowside Leisure Centre, which is using the boxing club as an alternative fitness centre, whilst Meadowside is closed for refurbishment.
The Meadowside Leisure Centre/Contours gym opens from 7.30am to 5.30pm daily, and the boxing club runs from 6.00pm to 8.30pm.
For further information, feel free to pop into the club on Bradmore Road or phone 01283 543121.
