Get involved and stage your own
On Tuesday 15 March, to celebrate 500 days to the Olympic Games, David Moorcroft, Chair of the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Games and Community Games organisers from across the West Midlands came together in Cheadle, Staffordshire to encourage communities to sign up to run their own Community Games events in the run up to 2012.
To-date over 12,000 people have participated in Community Games with a target of over 100,000 to have taken part in 500 Games by the end of 2012. Community Games, funded by Legacy Trust UK an independent charity set up to help build a lasting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, provide a wonderful and unique opportunity for communities from all backgrounds right across the West Midlands to come together to celebrate the 2012 Games and enable thousands of people to experience and create their own Olympic or Paralympic moment.
Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) are working to ensure Community Games will bring people in their local communities together to celebrate through sport, physical activity and culture.

David Moorcroft, Chair of the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Games said: “There is a great team coming together to deliver Community Games, with the County Sports Partnerships and StreetGames playing a coordinating role, and through Community Games you have a real opportunity to be inspired by and play your part in London 2012.
I urge everyone to get involved either setting up your own organising committee to plan an event in your area or by making sure you go along to your local Community Games event. However you decide to be part of London 2012 make sure you share your stories and tell us how you have been inspired on www.thegamesandme.com.”
Dugald Mackie, Chair of Legacy Trust UK said: “The benefits of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be felt not just in London but throughout the UK. The 2012 Games are a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase the West Midlands to millions of people across the world and a fantastic opportunity for communities to get involved by staging their own Games. We believe that Community Games will inspire and encourage people throughout the region to get involved and will help leave a lasting legacy for the region.”
Henry Parker, Vice Chair of the Oakamoor Community Games Organising Committee said: “Community Games is a great opportunity to bring the local community together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Following a successful Community Games event in 2010 aimed at all the family; the Oakamoor and South Moorlands Games will take place again on Sunday 3 July 2011. Successful activities from the 2010 Games will take place in 2011 including football, tag rugby, tug of war, netball, rounders, as well as a dance display, art display, face painting and Stone Town brass band plus an opening parade and closing concert. More information on this year’s Community Games event is available from Henry Parker on henryiparker@hotmail.com.
Community Games is just one programme through which people across the region can get involved with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games for more information on how to stage your own Community Games visit www.communitygames.org.uk.
