Golfers' are 'Aiming High' in Cannock Chase!
Development of golf for disabled children and young people in the Cannock Chase district has great success, due to partnership working with The Golf Academy, Cannock Park Golf Club, Aiming High and Sport Unlimited.
Cannock Chase Council’s, Chase It! programme, part of the Community Wellbeing Team-Sport have been working in partnership with Craig Thomas, from The Golf Academy to deliver high quality coaching to disabled young people.
Golf has proved very popular in Cannock Chase recently and partnership working has greatly improved access for those members of the community that might previously believed it was ‘not for them!’
The Golf Academy, based at the Essington driving range and Greenfield Golf Club near Wolverhampton, has already been awarded RangeMark – a national award for driving ranges at the forefront of developing the game which identifies and acknowledges junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities.
Launched in November last year the academy is the brainchild of three PGA qualified coaches, Craig Thomas, Craig Fletcher and Dannielle Wilkinson, and seeks to break down the barriers to people taking up golf; this being one of the primary factors when forging links with Cannock Park Golf Club; a municipal course which also offers memberships, is working towards achieving GolfMark status and is earmarked for improvement as part of the refurbishment of
Cannock Chase Leisure Centre.
‘Aiming High,’ has provided funding for sessions with Craig at the Golf Academy, Cannock Park Golf Club on Saturday Mornings 10:00am – 11:00am for disabled young people and has proved so popular that further sessions are planned and a second session is in the pipeline.
‘Sport Unlimited’, has provided sessions for Hednesford Valley School with around forty young people benefiting from Craig’s expertise. The hope is that some of the young people will attend the Golf Academy sessions on a Saturday and there are plans for them to attend Cannock Park Golf Club during the better weather.
