Two Rivers High School - Runners Up in 2011 Tag Rugby MLD National Finals
The Two Rivers team had a fantastic experience at the 2011 MLD Tag Rugby National Finals. We finished joint top of the league after the round robin stage, having only dropped points in two matches. The team developed during the tournament as individual players’ confidence grew so their impact on their team mates and the team play.
Unfortunately we were beaten to the title by Dovehouse School, Basingstoke, on tries scored (how unfair!). But the team was buoyed by the news that this year’s winners were the 2010 runner’s up. We are taking this as a good omen for the 2012 finals.
“The team have learnt a huge amount from this competition” said Ben Calvert-Lyons, P.E teacher and coach. “They have finished the tournament a better team than when we arrived. The players have worked together, supporting each other, developing their own game and therefore the team play as a whole. I am immensely proud of them.”

The team voted for individual awards amongst themselves. Ryan Knight (11), playing in his first Tag Rugby tournament, won player of the tournament. Ian Beech won Most Improved Player. Jack Hilton (Team Captain) won the Sportmanship award. Reece Machin’s try, involving a mazy run that covered almost every blade of grass on the pitch was voted Best Try of the tournament.
“As a team they excelled in every way, representingthe school impeccably. It was a privilige to be associated with the players and watch them play the game that I love to such a high standard, despite the fact that many have only been introduced to it this year. ” Dave Fortune, Coach.
“This has been a fantastic opportunity for the pupils and they have taken full advantage of it. However, we could not have managed to fund this without our generous sponsors: Graphityp, Hi Viz, Storm King and Alpha Sports” Vicky Vernon, Headteacher. “I am extremely proud of their achievement and have no doubt that they can build on this and bring the National Trophy back to Two Rivers next year!”
