Netball school club links success in Stoke-on-Trent
In the weeks leading up to half-term, Harriers Netball Club delivered after school coaching sessions to primary schools surrounding Holden Lane Sports College, which proved to be extremely successful.
Harriers Netball Club is a strong club with an excellent support structure and committed head coach, Carolyn Owen. The club gained Bronze accreditation last year and has women and girls participating in every age group. However, during the 06/07 season the club struggled to take on girls of a primary school due to a lack of links with schools in the surrounding area. Advertising with flyers did not work and Development days resulted in low attendance
too.
Therefore, in partnership with the Netball Development Co-ordinator, the local Sports College, Holden Lane High School in Stoke-on-Trent and the club, after school sessions were set up within the cluster closest to the club's training venue. Every Wednesday between 4:15 and 5:15pm boys and girls from the local primary schools came along to gain Netball Coaching from the club coach and youngsters who had attended a Young Netball Organiser course.
During the 4 weeks the club, along with the leaders coached over 30 different youngsters, with an average turn out of 26.
During this session parents came along to support and a number of teachers attended some of the sessions to gain extra knowledge to take back to their own schools. This way the parents were able to see their children in action and were given flyers to take away for the club training sessions.
As a result of this coaching, Harriers are now able to enter teams into the Staffordshire high 5 festivals, commencing on 9th December 2007 in Cheadle.
