West Midlands in the money after Lottery awards announcement Lottery funders get wind of Stoke-on-Trent mill project Removal of CIF Bidding Rounds The Regional Sports Board has agreed to remove, with immediate effect, the regional ‘bidding rounds’ process which applied to applications to the regional Community Investment Fund (CIF) programme through an open application route. This decision has been taken following the announced closure of the CIF programme by Sport England’s Main Board and the need to implement a nationally agreed process of closure. Although the bidding rounds have been removed the regional CIF programme is still open to new stage 1 applications until 6 January 2009. Sport England West Midlands will continue to make decisions on applications currently in the pipeline, and those received prior to the formal closure of the programme, until all remaining CIF funds have been fully committed. Information on the amount of CIF funding remaining can be found on the Sport England website and applicants are advised to contact to the regional investment team prior to submitting an application. Capacity builders launch £5 million capital grants programme
Kevin Brennan MP, Minister for the Third Sector said: "I am delighted that Capacitybuilders have announced the new Capital Investment Programme. It will help to develop and modernise much needed facilities for local third sector organisations. Organisations on the ground will be able to access local resource centres with improved facilities, such as better IT equipment and refurbished accommodation. This will provide invaluable support to local organisations that may not otherwise have access to suitable facilities." Higher education and community sport – Sport England working with BUCS A booklet reporting on this work has recently been published by SEentitled – Higher education and community sport Extracted from page 2 of the booklet: ‘There is an emerging partnership between the higher education sector and Sport England. This booklet seeks to raise awareness of the partnership whilst prompting further discussion to help make it even stronger. The following pages outline the breadth of the contribution that higher education makes to community sport, as well as the role that sport can play in achieving higher education’s strategic objectives. However, the information published is by no means exhaustive. An action plan will be developed by April 2009 providing greater detail about the role higher education can and does play as a key partner in community sport whilst supporting national governing bodies of sport.’ Read the new item on SE’s website Sport England guidance notes etc If you haven’t viewed this page on the main SE site for a while there are new guidance documents and other publications of interest – perhaps you haven’t seen the Active England case study document House of Commons Public Accounts Committee Making grants efficiently in the culture, media and sports sector (HC641, published 6 November 2008. It was conducted via the Blyk mobile service, asking a series of five open and multiple choice SMS questions to Blyk members aged 16 to 19. Responses were received from more than 3,700 individuals; significantly higher than most omnibus and consumer surveys. The poll's findings were further underlined by the fact that more than one in five of the surveyed 16 to 19 year olds clicked through to the http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/index.htm WAP site to find out about activities in their local area. New funding for young people at risk The Minister for Children and Young People at the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Beverley Hughes has this week announced a new funding initiative to give funding to 20 areas to help ‘challenging young people’. The Intensive Intervention Project will receive £13m in funding to be spread across the 20 earmarked areas, in a bid to set up targeted projects to help young people and their families. Commenting on the new funding agreement, Beverley Hughes said:
“These projects aim to help parents who often don’t know where to go or who to turn to next to help them tackle the problem behaviour of their child. They are sometimes unable to get the support and help they need from local services. The focus of these projects is on prevention and support. It’s non-negotiable and so we will intervene early to stop young people getting into a situation where their bad behaviour can spiral out of control and enforcement has to be used. But where enforcement is necessary it will be used and that will be made clear from the outset if young people don’t cooperate.”

The Department of Health has launched a new coalition called Change4Life. Working with the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the new campaign aims to bring together a number of grass roots organisations, companies and charities in order to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles. Organisations which have signed up to the campaign include Tesco, ASDA, Kelloggs, ITV, Cancer Research, the British Heart Foundation and BSkyB. There are no limitations on those organisations that choose to become involved in the programme, all of which will be coordinated by the Department of Health. The aim of the new campaign is to try and drive cultural changes in relation to diet and lifestyle. Some of the projects which have already been announced include a campaign to be run on ITV in the New Year, encouraging people to lose weight. Tesco and ASDA have also agreed to run promotional activity designed to encourage their employees and customers to buy healthier products.
Funding boost to help combat anti-social behaviour
The Minister for Children and Young People, Beverley Hughes MP, has announced a new funding scheme to help 77 local authorities provide activities on Friday and Saturday nights in order to discourage anti-social behaviour in communities. Each of the 77 earmarked authorities will receive £25,000 in order to roll-out new schemes designed to provide alternative activities for young people. Each authority will be able to decide the kinds of activities adopted, however possibilities include alcohol free night clubs or the introduction of new sports clubs.
Commenting on the funding package the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Rt Hon Ed Balls MP, said:
“Young people tell us that they want more things to do on Friday and Saturday nights and so we are giving 77 local areas an extra £25,000 each. Preventing young people from getting into trouble by offering them positive activities is the best way to tackle the minority of young people who cause disruption. This money will help make sure young people are interested in spending their time constructively. Together with the community, young people themselves are best placed to decide what these activities should be. So as well as funding local areas we are providing them with support, information and continuous help to ensure the activities available are what young people want and are prepared to get involved with.”
