Cyclists have wheelie good time
Young people within Stafford Borough have been participating in a cycling course where they were given the opportunity to try their hand at a range of activities from mountain biking to BMX riding. The course, delivered through the Sport Unlimited programme, was aimed at 11 to 19 year olds and ran for 8 weeks.
Staffordshire County Council's Road Safety Unit and Stafford Borough's Sports Development Team recently worked together to deliver a successful 8-week cycling project as part of the Sport Unlimited scheme.
The course attracted 14 young people aged between 11 and 19 and gave them the opportunity to experience many different aspects of cycling under the watchful eye of qualified instructors.
Each week the participants focused on a different element and were given a chance to develop their skills in areas such as mountain biking and cycle maintenance. The young people were also taken on supervised rides to enhance their road safety and to promote cycling as a health, fitness and travel alternative in the future.
The course culminated in a BMX week where participants were treated to coaching sessions and displays from the country's top BMX team. Two professional BMX stunt artists put the young people through their paces and helped them develop their skills and techniques.
Overall the 8 weeks course was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all the young people who took part. A similar course is currently being planned with future Sport Unlimited funding.
