Racketball makes an impact at South Moorlands Leisure Centre

 

 

 

Sport Across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent ‘Sports Capacity Funding’ is starting to have a positive impact at South Moorlands Leisure Centre and has led to an increase in racketball participation, with more activity planned after their court refurbishment.

 

Driven by England Squash & Racketball in partnership with SASSoT and South Moorlands Leisure Centre, funding has been successfully secured, which will significantly help develop and sustain squash and racketball activity at this facility.

 

As part of the application, England Squash & Racketball have planned a lengthy programme with Staffordshire Development Coach, Rose Davis, to deliver Mini Squash to juniors as well as squash and racketball for beginners of all ages. The funding awarded will provide Mini Squash equipment and also training members of staff to deliver weekly sessions, which will ensure progressive junior development for the sport. So far Rose has targeted the ‘U3A’ group and also an over 50s group, which both meet on a weekly basis to play badminton, bowls and swimming. The response has been fantastic with 16 people already signed up to play. The centre is very pleased to be able to provide an additional sport and would like the governing body to target other groups for this aerobic activity. 

South Moorlands currently has 2 courts in use for squash and racketball which will be refurbished within the next couple of months. After this time, England Squash & Racketball will deliver a six week mini squash programme, inviting schools to participate in a basic introduction to squash.

 

The courts operate on a pay and play basis and all sessions with Rose are currently free with everyone welcome to take part.
