Special guest sprints to Shobnall to open newly refurbished running track
.
A special guest, former Olympic runner Daniel Caines, sprinted into Burton upon Trent on 16th November to officially open the newly refurbished facility at Shobnall Leisure Complex.
The running track, along with the high jump area and long jump runways have been completely resurfaced and remarked and the area around the throwing cage has been resurfaced, as part of a refurbishment programme for the athletics facility. The project also included the complete replacement of the floodlight system providing more efficient and cost effective lighting for the track areas
Daniel, a professional sportsman and former Olympic team long-distance runner, currently runs for Birchfield Harriers, located at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham and has competed for Team GB in two Olympic games, the Athens 2004 Games and Sydney 2000 Games.
He was joined at the official opening ceremony by Deputy Leader for Environment and Leisure, Councillor Bernard Peters, and members of the local Burton Athletics Club – who were training there on the night.
Councillor Peters said: “We were delighted that Daniel had been able to come down and officially open this much improved facility for our borough’s athletic fans.
“East Staffordshire Borough Council is committed to providing first class sport and leisure facilities for our residents, and it is particularly apt as the whole country prepares for the 2012 Olympics, that our guest is someone who has personally experienced the thrill of competing for his country.
“I hope any young sports stars who come down can get some inspiration from Daniel’s visit and from the excellent new track.”
