Staffordshire Youth Anglers Gain Clubmark Accreditation
This latest achievement by Staffordshire Youth Anglers has topped a great year for the club, which has seen nine of their volunteers qualify as Level 1 and Level 2 angling coaches, four of which are youth coaches aged 16–20 years.
Other developments have included the selection of the club’s chairman Bradley Parkes as UK Angling Ambassador and the launch of their new website www.staffordshireyouthanglers.com
The club has also been busy this year piloting the new beginner awards for the Angling Development Board as well as running holiday taster sessions during the summer and October half-term breaks.
Staffordshire Youth Anglers are also currently working with two schools in Rugeley and Stafford running after-school angling sessions.
Chairman Brad commented: "This has been a very busy year for us and we have really grown, taking on 26 new members throughout the year and strengthening our volunteer qualifications and the coaching programme that we can now offer to members, schools and other local partners/organisations. We are particularly proud of our youth coaching team, all of whom have been with the club for several years and have worked as peer mentors within the group and
have now become nationally qualified. It's great and we are really looking forward to our end of year presentation event on the 27th November when we will be recognising all our members’ achievements through the year."
Staffordshire Youth Anglers have become the first club in the county to attain Club Mark accreditation. Carol Parkes has done a sterling job in coordinating the process and has found the process really enlightening in the way that clubs can constantly evolve and how to cope and understanding changing legislation.
Membership at the club has greatly increased, but the ethos hasn’t. They constantly challenge their young people to take ownership of their club and to encourage leadership within it. Consequently it has an extremely high retention rate of participants, with many becoming mentors and coaches for newer members.
Angling within schools and other organisations is becoming stronger and its appeal as a conduit to improve learning and to engage semi-sporty individuals is showing real value.
County-wide competition at U15 level will be introduced in 2011 to suit all levels of experience. A talent development pathway will also be introduced following the competitions.
The County Angling Action Group will meet again in early January to discuss the competitions, any clubs or organisations with an interest in angling can attend; dates venue and times will be posted on ADB website.
UKCC level 1 and level 2 coaching courses are also available.
