County Sports Partnership Update

  

Sport Makers is officially launched in Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent 

On Monday 7th November 2011, Sport Across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent launched a new and exciting programme, Sport Makers - a National Lottery funded programme for people who’d like to make sport happen in their local community. 

 

Open to anyone aged 16 and over, Sport Makers aims to inspire over 800 people in Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent to get involved and make sport happen for their friends, neighbours or colleagues, with each of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. 

 

SASSOT celebrated the launch of this exciting programme in collaboration with students from the ‘Active Universities’ project.  This project is co-ordinated by Staffordshire & Keele Universities who are working in partnership to engage approximately 2000 students in informal introductory sessions and games, intramural competitions and varsity matches with the aim of the project being to increase student participation in sport .

The launch event also provided students with the opportunity to hear from local GB athletes Michelle Ross-Cope and Mark Fosbrook who were on hand to share their experiences and deliver master class demonstrations. Five-time Olympic Gold medalist, Sir Steve Redgrave has also joined forces with Sport England and SASSOT to launch Sport Makers, “You don’t need medals to become a sporting hero. By helping people you know to get involved in sport you’ll be doing something amazing for your friends and local community as well as having fun yourself”. 
 

Every Sport Maker will be invited to an informal and interactive workshop where they’ll gain the skills and opportunities to get involved in sport in Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent. Sport Makers will be introduced to organisations that need their help, and join forces with others who want to make sport happen locally. There’ll also be opportunities to meet top athletes and plenty of incentives to stay involved.  People can sign up to the programme at www.sportmakers.co.uk

Aiming High: Disability Sport and Physical Activity

 

Disabilit-e News provides information about what is happening within the county, nationally and in the elite world of disability sport. It will also advertises courses, clubs, events and success stories to motivate and inspire.There is also a dedicated section on Aiming High and the good work it is doing to promote activity based short breaks for disabled children and families.
