Female Sport on the increase in Stoke-on-Trent
StreetGames, Stoke-on-Trent’s Us Girls programme is looking at female groups from colleges, universities, children centres or from communities in and around Stoke-on-Trent who predominantly fit into the 16-25 age group who would like to engage with sport and physical activity. We are able to deliver a number of team sports such as football, cricket, dodge ball, hockey and basketball but we are also are able to deliver a number of exciting fitness activities
that may be more appealing such as dance, trampoline, martial arts, cheerleading, cardio tennis, boxing and fitness work.
At present we are working with Stoke-on-Trent College to put on a weekly female football session as well as Northwood Valiants Basketball club to set up a female basketball session, training is held between 8-9pm on a Friday night at Northwood Stadium. There is
also a female only football session on Staffs University’s Astroturf pitch on a Tuesday from 7-8pm that is delivered in partnership with Staffordshire Football Association. Finally, Changes (Young People) a local mental health focused charity also now offers a weekly session for their female clients in fitness and cheerleading. Both the basketball session and the football at Staffs University are open to all so feel free to come down and participate in
these activities if you are aged 16-25, female and interested in taking part.
If you work with or belong to a group of women aged 16-25 and would like this group to become a bit ‘sportier’ or to try some new activities out then feel free to contact StreetGames, Stoke-on-Trent and sign up to the Us girls programme. These sessions are a great way for women who have possibly not done much activity since school to get fit by re-engaging with sport and exercise in a fun and friendly environment. It also provides a
great way to make new friends.
There is also the opportunity for people who are interested in volunteering to take ownership of these sessions. There is funding available in order to train these volunteers in sports related qualifications in order to make the sessions sustainable.
