Coach Scholarship Scheme
Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) recognises that having a fit for purpose coaching workforce is central to successfully developing and delivering sport.
One of the key objectives of the SASSOT Workforce Plan is to build the capacity of the coaching workforce in the sub region.
Following a successful application to Sport England's Community Investment Fund, SASSOT is able to offer financial support through this Coach Scholarship Programme to its partners to help train and develop more coaches.

Local coaches get their hands on Olympic medalSports coaches from across Staffordshire came together on 12th October to further their dreams of becoming potential 2012 coaches and get their hands on a real Olympic Medal. Former Olympic athlete, Mark Richardson provided an inspirational talk to over 100 local sports coaches at the Sport Across Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) Coaches Conference held at Staffordshire University.
Pictured left to right: Mark Thornewill, SASSOT Director, Mark Richardson and delegates Alice Lennox and Lindsey Meek The day witnessed coaches taking part in various workshops from sports nutrition and psychology, developing power and speed, mini basketball, athletics strength and conditioning and coaching disabled performers. The event provided all coaches the opportunity to gain new skills and qualifications allowing them to coach the sporting stars of the future.
Mark Richardson said: "I believe that coaching is the key to unlocking an individual’s/team’s potential. With the right balance of support and challenge and by using tools such as goal setting and feedback, horizons can be expanded and performance increased."
SASSOT who are the coordinating body for sport in the county identified the need for greater recognition of coaches and have developed this event to allow coaches to fulfil their potential. The event was a great day that supports the professional development of coaches in a fun and interactive way.

The date and venue for the 2009 Special Schools Sports Festival has been confirmed for Wednesday 1st July 2009 at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton upon Trent. The date was chosen so that it ties in with the Youth Sport Trust’s National School Sport week, which starts on Monday 29th June 2009.
The Special Schools Sports festival organised by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) continues to go from strength to strength and will be in its eighth year in 2009.
Last year over 220 pupils from 12 of the county’s Special Schools participated and we are hoping to build on this for the 2009 event. On the day, pupils take part in coaching sessions and mini competitions in variety of sports, which will be confirmed early in 2009.
This year we hope to be able to follow up the event with the provision of coaching in some of the special schools to build upon the interest generated at the festival and hopefully work with sports clubs to develop pathways for pupils to continue to participate in sport outside the school environment.
To aid this transition from school to community and as part of SASSOT’s Club Support plan we will also be producing a Disability Sports Club database on our website – www.sportacrossstaffordshire.co.uk
Further details will be circulated shortly but for all queries please contact: Chris Turner
