Sports Programme attracts VIP Cheerleaders
Cheerleaders put through paces
One of Sport England’s top officials visited Stafford on 29th September to see a successful cheerleading project that is helping local youngsters get fit.
Mike Diaper, Executive Director of the Children and Young People’s Team watched teenagers going through their cheerleading paces at Stafford Sports College. Barry Austin accompanied him from the Department for Culture Media and Sport.
The weekly cheerleading sessions are part of the national Sport Unlimited programme and has been running at the school for the last two years. The young cheerleaders from 10 to 16 years old demonstrated their skills to show the Sport England boss how the programme is coming along at a local level.
The Sport Unlimited projects are being led by Stafford Borough Council along with the Stafford and Stone School Sports Partnership. Activities include tennis, cycling, rugby for girls, athletics, girls’ football and gym sessions.
Sport England has recently invested £36 million into Sport Unlimited nationally to increase sporting opportunities for young people, which are being delivered across the county through Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent.
Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture commented, “It is great to be able to support a scheme which gets more young people into sport and physical activities. The cheerleading sessions are one of the innovative ways we can help achieve this.”
Dr R Blencowe, head teacher at Stafford Sports College commented, “I am delighted to welcome Mike Diaper, Barry Austin and other sporting colleagues to Stafford Sports College for this sporting event.”
