Stafford Borough Council’s Summer Star:track Athletics scheme attracted a range of ability levels from beginners to national standard junior athletes. Everyone that went along, enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and fun based competition structure typical of the Star:track programme.
This summer Stafford Borough Council’s Sport Development team, building on the success of previous years, organised two weeks of Star:track Athletics. And once again, the scheme proved to be hugely popular. Over 150 aspiring young athletes aged between 8 and 15 signed up to benefit from professional coaching in a variety of running, jumping and throwing events.
Sporting Champion, Phil Brown, who has competed in the Olympics as a 400m runner, visited the young athletes on Friday 3rd August, and inspired them and the coaches to achieve to the best of their ability.
This year, a high coach athlete ratio, enabled the delivery of a good quality athletics programme throughout the week with athletes appropriately grouped depending on age and ability levels.
The final day took the form of a team competition, ending with a grand prix relay event, followed by presentations made by Olympian Phil Brown. Awards were given to athletes showing the bestattitude throughout the scheme, to those who improved the most and for the winning team.
Due to the scheme’s success it has been nominated at the England Athletics West Midlands Awards Evening under the category of Team / Partnership for the local Authority Award for 2007.
