Staffordshire Primary Schools' Women's World Cup Festival
Staffordshire FA held a Women’s World Cup Festival for Primary Schools in the County to celebrate the Women’s World Cup taking place in China.
On Monday 17 September, a total of 30 school teams took part in the festival held at Rowley Park in Stafford, with over 300 girls from school years 3&4 and 5&6 participating.
The day was an opportunity for all who took part to play some football and get involved with the spirit of the Women’s World Cup, with the aim of raising awareness of women’s football as a whole and providing the opportunity for girls to participate in football.

Each individual school team on the day was given a Country participating in the World Cup to adopt, which they would then be known as and participate as during the festival. The schools were also challenged to be as creative as they could in the build up to the festival by creating flags, banners, badges and logos at school that they could then bring with them on the day and use to show off the Country they were representing, as well as giving their supporters
something to wave whilst the girls were playing their games. Every school team also came dressed in the same colours of the Country they were playing as. There were some fantastic examples of flags and badges on show, the Ghanain team came with a huge flag banner, the England team all had their England shirts on and there were also Cheerleaders and Pom-Poms on show courtesy of the USA teams.
In true World Cup style, each Country was put into a group with a number of other nations, with each of the Countries in their groups then playing against one another in mini-soccer format matches.

Every player on the day went away with a certificate and some World Cup goodies, as well as the schools receiving a number of posters to display back in their sports hall at school.
The day provided a great opportunity for all of the girls who took part to have the experience of playing football, whether they have played before or not, as well as making them aware of the opportunities for females within football.
