Sport England's £36m investment to get more young people doing 5 hours of sport per week goes nationwide Sport England today announced a £36 million investment in ‘Sport Unlimited’ - a nationwide initiative to get more children and young people taking part in sports that interest them most outside of school. The three-year programme will enable 900,000 more 11-19 year olds to choose from a vast range of sports including several in which Team GB has excelled at the 2008 Olympics such as sailing and cycling as well as less traditional sports like dodgeball, snowboarding and American football………… To read the full Press Release click here Sport and the Olympics Launch of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad The Cultural Olympiad for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has now been launched and it will begin with over 160 organisations being represented at ‘Open Weekend’ in London on the 26th - 28th September 2008. The Cultural Olympiad consists of a number of events and is designed to showcase the talent and creativity in the UK ahead of the 2012 Games. The aim is to use the profile of the Olympics to enhance not only sporting talent but also talent from the arts and creative industries world. The Olympiad was first introduced by the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, as a way of intertwining sport and the arts. Plans for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad include major projects such as ‘Film Nation’ which is designed to encourage young people to get behind the camera and ‘Discovering Places’ which is designed to open up historic environments to new audiences. Of most interest to sporting organisations, the Cultural Olympiad also includes provisions to see more people involved in sport. The ‘Somewhereto’ project, for example, is designed to empower young people to find locations to practice their sport and culture on their own terms. The Cultural Olympiad will be rolled out from the end of September with over 500 planned events as part of Open Weekend across the country, designed to captivate the attention of the nation. Commenting on the Olympiad, the Chair of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Lord Sebastian Coe said:
“In our bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, our promise was and still is to make our Games accessible to everyone. To build on the vision of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic movement, by having a Games that inextricably links sport, culture and education. Open Weekend and the cultural programme over the coming four years, shows our commitment to this.”
