National Interclubs Champions and two medals at World Championships
Stafford and Stone Canoe Club (SSCC) proved its strength in depth by winning the National Interclubs Canoe Slalom Championships whilst club members Lizzie Neave and Laura Blakeman won medals at the World Championships.
22-year old Lizzie Neave won a Bronze Medal in the Kayak Women’s class whilst together with Laura Blakeman and Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club’s Louise Donnington, won a Gold team medal at the World Canoe Slalom Championships in Seu D’Urgell, Spain. Mark Proctor, also from SSCC, was competing in C1 (Canadian Singles) and
came 24th in the heats.
With their top paddlers missing, SSCC still managed a convincing win at the Interclubs Championships held nr Bedford. This is the 17th time in its 24-year history that the club has won the trophy. The SSCC B team, sponsored by the Stone Festival Committee, came a close 2nd place. To win the Interclubs Championships the team needs to be strong at all levels and in all classes – something SSCC excels at. 21 Teams from all over all the
country competed but no other club could get anywhere near SSCC.
SSCC Interclubs team manager, Ruth Holdway, commented: “We saw some really good racing and excellent team spirit at the Interclub Championships this weekend. Our main rivals were our own B team which made it fun. The icing on the cake was the announcement that Lizzie had won a Bronze medal at the Worlds following the team Gold the previous day. It goes to show that SSCC dominates canoe slalom at all levels.”
