Racketball - Re-launched
Earlier this year, the governing body for squash was renamed as England Squash & Racketball. This new formation demonstrates a very positive effort to increase participation on the squash courts and raise the profile of both sports.
Thanks to a successful partnership between England Squash & Racketball and SASSOT, Rose Davies was recently appointed as a Development Coach for Staffordshire. Rose has already begun to introduce beginner's squash and racketball as part of a plan to increase court usage across the county. It is hoped that alongside working with schools to increase junior participation, local clubs and leisure centres will have an opportunity to try
racketball within their facilities.
Racketball is very similar to squash, but is played with a slightly larger racket and a bigger, bouncier ball, making it easy to get a rally going; This ensures a good workout for both players. It is especially great for anyone new or if the old wooden racket is gathering dust! Racketball has made a number of squash club and leisure centre courts extremely popular seeing a fantastic increase in court use and participation
rate.
Courts are widely available across Staffordshire with most clubs and centres having rackets and balls available to hire cheaply, so if you want to get started you just need to bring some sports clothes and trainers (do check with the club or centre about non-marking soles though).
Rose currently plays squash at Trentham Golf Club which boasts a very active squash membership and now includes some racketball players. In addition to the squash league, Rose is confident that with the increasing interest, a racketball ladder will be introduced within the near future.
