Stoke StreetGames Festival 2010
A multi sport event was delivered at Northwood Stadium on 27th August 2010 for young people aged 8-19 who already attend StreetGames sessions across the city to try out new sports and play competitions in sports that they already love.
The Stoke StreetGames festival was a celebration event for the hundreds of young people around the city who take part in StreetGames on a weekly basis. The event took place at Northwood Stadium on Friday August 27th and was free to all young people participating. Young people from all over the city attended and fortunately the weather was nice and everyone appeared to enjoy themselves.
On the day we had 408 young people attend aged between 8 and 19. There were a number of taster activities for the young people to try out which were all busy on the day. Young people got to try out activities/ sports sessions in the following badminton, table tennis, athletics, archery, streetcheer, football skills, karate and rowing. Medals and prizes were awarded to a variety of young people who took part in the activities.
There were also competitions in basketball, football and dodge ball. Basketball only had 3 teams entering but the event was delivered in good spirit and a number of the young people were playing in an organised basketball competition for the first time. The dodge ball tournament was delivered for the first time at any StreetGames festival organised. There was 18 teams entered and all the rules were adhered to and the referees decisions respected.
As expected at most events the 5-aside football tournament proved to be the most popular with 36 teams entering from 4 different age groups. The football was fiercely competitive with team winners coming from different areas of the city including Birches head, Normacot and Bentillee.
On the whole it was a fantastic spectacle of sport for young people in Stoke-on-Trent. They got to try out a number of new sports, enter competition in sports that they particularly enjoy, socialise with existing friends whilst making new friends and most importantly having a lot of fun and keeping fit in the process.
