Stoke are a success at the West Midlands StreetGames Festival
StreetGames Stoke-on-Trent gets 250 regular participants a week from all across the city. On August 5th, 2011 StreetGames Stoke-on-Trent took 45 of these participants to the West Midlands StreetGames festival delivered at Nechells Leisure Centre, Birmingham. This is an annual event that attracts participants from 15 projects across the West Midlannds. StreetGames, Stoke-on-Trent had the one of the largest groups of participants despite having to travel the
furthest.
At the festival there were competitions in basketball, football and StreetCheer and taster sessions in activities such as panna football, table tennis, athletics and badminton. The StreetGames Stoke-on-trent programme entered two teams in the 16-19 boys football category, two teams in the year 10 and 11 boys football category, one team in the 16-19 boys basketball, two teams in the year 10 and 11 boys basketball, one team in the year 8 and 9 boys basketball and
one team in the year 8 and 9 girls basketball. Teams came from all over Stoke-on-Trent including Greenfield Road in Tunstall, Nacro, Norton, Northwood and the Bankeyfields estate.
The day began with the first collection of participants at 7.55am and finished at 20.15pm. Despite it being a 12 hour day all young people were well behaved and did themselves and Stoke-on-Trent extremely proud.
All young people went home with a free water bottle, t-shirt and coca cola branded bag and they all had an extremely enjoyable day. Certain teams from Stoke-on-Trent came home with more than just the mentioned freebies. Northwood Valliant’s year 10 and 11 basketball team finished as champions of the 3 v 3 basketball competition by 2 points after a nail biting final. Norton were also champions of the year 10 and 11 5-aside
football tournament after progressing through the semi final via a penalty shoot out, it was another calmly taken penalty in the final that won them the tournament.
