Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Disability Research Project

The following report represents the culmination of three years partnership working and provides invaluable information in terms of the needs and aspirations of disabled people when it comes to sport and physical activity.

In 2001 a 'Sporting Opportunities for Disabled People Steering Group' was formed, comprising the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), Sport Across Staffordshire (SAS),Staffordshire University. The Group commissioned a three month research project which carried out an audit of leisure and sporting activities for disabled people in Staffordshire.

The project highlighted the need for additional research, therefore members of SAS: the eight local authorities who form Staffordshire County, Staffordshire Education Authority, the City of Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire University supported a proposal and contributed financially to a 12 month research project. Funding was obtained from the Sport England Active Communities Development Fund programme with EFDS contributing both financially and by hosting the post at its Alsager headquarters.
