Sporting Champions - www.sportingchampions.org.uk
Sporting Champions is a Sport England initiative, which brings world-class athletes face-to-face with Young People to inspire and motivate them to participate in sport.
Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, in partnership with Sporting Champions, is offering your Community Sports Network, Club or Event the opportunity to receive a visit from a top class athlete.
Sporting Champions organise around 450 visits each year, bringing 100 world-class athletes into schools and local communities throughout the country. 200 of these are set aside for community-based visits, co-ordinated through County Sport Partnerships, to encourage young people to be more active so they can live up to their potential in sport and in every other part of their lives.
The visits themselves can be tailored to fit the needs of a community-focused organisation and allow for interaction between the Champion and Young People. They can involve coaching workshops, interactive sessions or targeted activity to promote development of school and club links, and raise awareness of the benefits to leadership and volunteering.
A Sporting Champions visit can be used to:
1. Raise awareness of sport and the benefits of sport and physical activity
2. Motivate young people in their wider lives with a talk based on the Champion's own experience and directly related to the key theme of the event
3. Practical element e.g. workshops, demonstrations, coaching sessions.
4. Engage and enthuse young people - question and answer session
5. Increase the profile of a variety of sports and local sports clubs
6. Improve behaviour in the local community
7. Raise the profile of a particular event
To find out more visit Sporting Champions' website at www.sportingchampions.org.uk
How to Apply
Funding secured by Sporting Champions for the period April 07 to March 08 will allow us to apply for a national pot of around 200 visits. Requests for these visits are to be made via the County Sports Partnership and must demonstrate support to Sport England's vision and Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent's Delivery Plan through one or all of the following key themes:
To apply, simply complete the attached form (click here to download) and return to Leigh Morton lmorton@staffordbc.gov.uk . Your request will then be submitted to Sporting Champions who will thereafter liaise with you direct regarding the outcome and visit arrangements.
So, have a think about your forthcoming events, and let's try to get as many Champions to visit community-based activities from the 200 in the national pot up for grabs! Please do not nominate schools or School Sports Partnerships, as these visits will be coordinated through the YST and SSP networks.
The inspirational effect of these visits from top class athletes can not be overestimated. Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent have used these visits at a number of events including the Festival of Sport & Enjoyment 2007 and Star:Track ahtletics programmes and want to hear from you if your Community Sports Network, Club or Event can use a visit.
This is a fantastic opportunity - don't miss it!!
For more information on the above please contact Leigh Morton, Admin Officer on (01785) 619349 or lmorton@staffordbc.gov.uk
