Whats it all About?!

Sportivate is part of 'Places People Play', the 2012 mass participation legacy programme which is being delivered by Sport England.  A nation-wide initiative, Sportivate will target 14-25 year olds who are non- or semi-sporty and offer them the chance to take part in 6-8 weeks of sporting activity, introducing them to a new sport or giving them the chance to improve their skills in something they've previously tried and enjoyed.

Over the next four years, Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent will receive over £600,000 of Lottery Funding to deliver the programme across the sub-region, with a target of nearly 6000 young people completing a block of sessions and then at least 40% of these participants continuing to take part in sport afterwards.

At a local level, the programme will co-ordinated by a Lead Organisation for each District, who is responsible for ensuring that what is offered locally is what young people want, and for engaging with other local organisations to deliver activity.

Background 

London 2012 Mass Participation Legacy (Places People Play)

'Places People Play' is a £135 million initiative which has been made possible by the

Government's National Lottery reforms and will bring additional funding into grassroots

sport. It will be delivered by Sport England, in partnership with the British Olympic

Association, the British Paralympic Association and the London Organising Committee of

the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will bring the inspiration and magic of a home

Olympics and Paralympics into the heart of local communities, encouraging more people to get involved in sport.

Sport England and their partners will transform the places where people play sport, making the benefits of London 2012 visible in cities, towns and villages across the country by:

• upgrading up to a thousand local sports clubs and facilities;
• investing in a number of iconic multi-sport facilities that set the standards for future facilities development;
• protecting and improving hundreds of playing fields across the country, preserving high-quality spaces for local people to play and enjoy sport.

Sport England and their partners will inspire people to make sport happen at the local level, embedding the Olympic and Paralympic values in grassroots sport. This will be done by recruiting, training and deploying tens of thousands of leaders as the next generation of sports volunteers to organise and lead grassroots sporting activities.

Sport England and their partners will create the sporting opportunities and challenges that give everyone the chance to become part of the mass participation legacy through:

• Gold Challenge - an independent social enterprise that will motivate over one hundred thousand adults  to test themselves in multiple Olympic and Paralympic sports, and in doing so raise millions of pounds for charity
• Sportivate - a nationwide campaign that will capture the excitement of sport, providing opportunities for teenagers and young adults to receive coaching in the sport of their choice and then guiding them into regular participation within their community.

Sport England and their partners will also be consulting disabled people and those who support them on how we can focus some additional investment (at least £8 million) on the barriers they face when they want to play sport, as well as making sure that every element of this programme works for disabled sportsmen and women too.

Links between Sportivate and the other strands of Places People Play will be investigated and encouraged.
