Below are individual case studies of just some of the projects
that have been awarded through SASSOT's ACCESS Across Staffordshire funding scheme

Staffordshire Cricket has used it's grant of £500 in several ways to encourage more womens and girls development and access throughout the county.
The womens and girls section of the website has been upgraded to include more information and a club list with contacts for each club.

To bring more members of the community into helping at the Centre as assistant sailing instructors, especially females as there has been a decline in females taking up responsible roles within sailing Clubs.

The funding went towards the training of two female learners who were relatively new to sailing but had an interest, as they regularly attended the centre with their Youth Group.

They achieved level two awards and also continued with one modular from the level three advanced sailing scheme. Plus attended the centre assistant instructor induction day.
If the funding can be found and importantly the time and commitment, they can progress to becoming recognised Royal Yachting Association Sailing Instructors.

Boogie Bounce was organised in order to engage girls in Physical Education and allow them to participate in extra exercise outside of school. The bouncers are a fun and interesting way to keep fit, and as they are different to general exercise the girls really enjoyed it.
Boogie Bounce co-ordinated in lessons to introduce it to pupils and then put into an after school club.
Higher number of pupils especially disengaged pupils participating in lessons and after school clubs. This was a great success and will continue to be.
More clubs open to more year groups.

We are a Registered Charity and our aims are to provide football opportunities for any person who wants to play the game of football. We have 20 young girls aged between 5 and 9 and the ones who are aged 8 as at September 1st can join a new team. We decided to create a new team for the 2010/11 season.
Coaching every week at Cannock Cricket & Hockey Club during the winter months and at Landywood school in evenings when it is light enough. Each session lasts 1 hour minimum, where basic football skills are coached in, together with fun games to create a team atmosphere.
We now have 20 girls on the register, 10 of whom will go on to create the new team, with the remainder staying behind to be part of new teams for future years bolstered by new recruits.
Continued coaching; more advertising for young players to replace those going forward into the team.

The project was established to increase the number of girls playing football, & to offer opportunities to age groups that are not currently catered for.
A number of training session's were arranged to introduce new players to the club, the response we had was mixed but this may of also been due to the extremely poor weather condition's we endured during the early months of 2010.
The club also supported a Girls only schools football tournament organised by the Cannock & Rugeley School Sports partnership which saw 11 players express an interest in joining the club.
Approximately 15 new players have taken part in club training session's and shown an interest in playing for the club competitively in the South Staffs Young Womens League on a Saturday afternoon. We also held a family fun day which included a mini football tournament to give the girls the opportunity to play competitively against other teams, this was a great success with approx 50 girls taking part during the day.
The club will look to offer a prolonged training program for new players each season, but following the difficulties arising from the poor weather we may look to hold the session's indoors during January - february to ensure these session's are not cancelled.
We will also look to increase the promoting of the session's more within the local school's and have spoken to the school sports partnership about distributing leaflets to all potential players within the local catchment area.

Increase opportunities and access for students with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (some of which have Life Limiting Illnesses) based at The Meadows Special School. The Meadows Special School relocated to Leek and became part of the Staffordshire Moorlands School Leek Sports Cluster in September 2009.

I linked the PMLD students into the Rudyard Sailability Centre (based at Rudyard Lake). I feel the project greatly enhanced the learning/life experiences of the students. The students were able to: see/feel/touch this initiative; allowing them to access new activities and be challenged at an appropriate level to their abilities/needs.
PMLD Students and their Teachers/Carers were able to access Sailing at Rudyard Lake via the Sailability organisation. Some students were hoisted into the boats; others were able to access the lake in their wheelchairs via the specially adapted 'safety/rescue' boat. Also trainee Sports Leader students at The Meadows Special School and Leek High Specialist Technology School were able to assist with this initiative.
PMLD Students and their Teachers/Carers were able to access Sailing at Rudyard Lake via the Sailability organisation. Also trainee Sports Leader students at The Meadows Special School and Leek High Specialist Technology School were able to assist with this initiative. The funding from Access Across Staffordshire enabled the hiring of specially Adapted Taxi Transportation to/from Leek to Rudyard. At the time the Meadows Minibus was unable to transport the PMLD
students due to the student's profound physical needs and the limited access of the bus. This 'hurdle' has now been overcome as on 23/7/10 the Lords Taverners Association proudly handed over to The Meadows School a brand new fully wheelchair accessible minibus!
Initially the project was for this summer. However it is hoped that the value to the students in terms of their: social, educational and physical needs of the Sailability activity is now entrenched at The Meadows School. Hence; with the new minibus overcoming the transportation issue; The Meadows is very keen to continue accessing Rudyard Sailability with their PMLD students and indeed with other students at the school. This access grant has proved a highly effective catalyst for change. Sustainability is assured. I sincerely thank Sports Across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent for supporting this initiative with The Meadows School, through the Access Across Staffordshire funding initiative. It has proved to be an outstanding successful Staffordshire Moorlands School Sports Partnership programme.

To engage Girls into Sport, currently the campus on lead on Boy's Sports and nothing was a option for the girls. To encourage more competition and leadership across the girls.

We run Netball training sessions every Wednesday with a qualified coach. Organised a Netball Competition and looking to organise another one in the new academic year.
Girls now participating in regular physical activity and had the chance of competition. Leaders were spotted from the sport and using the Step Into Sport programme to log their hours.
Use leaders to engage the new intake of students and create more teams with more Competitions. The college has since brought more bibs and more Netballs to train with.

No organisation provided football for people with special needs. The feedback from all special schools, MENCAP and the Gateway Club for people with special needs was that adults and children had no place to go to play football. The money provided allowed us to train coaches, buy equipment and to provide a safe environment with qualified people. All of the coaches and committee are CRB checkec, and all players have to fill in a medical form to ensure staff are aware of any problems that may be encountered on training and match days.

Once a week all of the players attend training/coaching sessions, and once a month they all travel to either Longton or Burton to take part in a football festival, against different teams.

We now have teams in the following categories:
We are now attracting people from a wide area, because of the increasing success the club is having.
We are working with the FA to try and attract more and more people, so that we can increase the number of teams. We are also looking to do some coaching in schools with special needs, either through the FA or by trying to attract funds from other organisations like SASSOT.

Coaching was aimed at providing the confidence to paddle independently at the club as well as moving towards NGB personal skills awards eg BCU paddlesport START and 1star.
Opportunities to appreciate the differing aspects of paddlesport were provided, from recreational and social through to competition paddling.
15 participants continued after the first session of which 12 took advantage of discounted membership. Six of these were family memberships and there was a further adult partner membership taken up. Knock-on effect was partners coming along for club beginners' courses and a regular recreational paddling 'after school' group.
From this the club has benefited not only from increased volunteer support but also increased participation. % of female members has continued to grow, (now 38%.) Course was well over-subscribed; 20+ could not be accommodated on the original course/wanted alternative dates. Observable increase in confidence and integration into full range of club activities.

Through Research we found that there was a lack of female coached in the county. It was found the reason that women did not want to take part in coaching courses was because they felt a little intimidated by the amount of men on the courses. Therefore we decide to run a female only course.
All Participants passed the course and now coach youngsters and particularly girls at their clubs.

The number of girls football teams in Stoke on Trent is relatively low in comparison to other areas of the County. To help support and increase the number of opportunities for girls playing football in the City, Stoke on Trent was targeted as a priority and therefore the Football Centre was introduced. The Staffordshire FA had set out a Girls School Coaching Programme for all Primary Schools in the North Stoke SSP, and with the help of the PDM, a coaching programme was established in the schools, with the football centre being an exit route for any girls who wanted to continue playing football away from school.
Weekly football sessions are taking place at Holden Lane Sports College in Stoke on Trent, offering the opportunity for girls aged 5 - 12 years old with the chance to play football every Saturday morning.
A female coach delivers a mixture of skill, technique and game related coaching sessions and matches, supporting the Long Term player development and FA four corner model to improve and develop all aspects of the players game.
Local FA Charter Standard Football Clubs are also supporting the programme to ensure girls have access to local clubs should they wish to join.

Thanks to an ACCESS grant from Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire FA has been able to start running a pilot 4v4 special schools girls league at the Powerleague, Stoke. The idea is to get more females playing football in a comfortable environment whilst realising the challenges of schools making 7-aside teams. The Staffordshire FA's 4v4 Special Schools
Girls League held 5 rounds of fixtures in which six teams have taken part, the league has produced an opportunity for approx 35 girls to play football in an environment where they feel more comfortable as there are no male intimidations, the league has provided a lot of enjoyment for the players, excitement for the spectators, plenty of quality football and goals galore!
The league was opened up to all special schools each fixture date to allow more girls to participate with Two Rivers, Middlehurst and Aynsley each entering 2 teams each. After the positive response received from players, supporters and teachers alike we are planning to run the Girls 4v4 League annually which will hopefully increase the number of female participation in Disability
Football, whether it's refereeing, administering or playing and offering further opportunities on the FA's Disability Player Pathway.

The Able Too Games offers the opportunity to people with disabilities to take part in and enjoy a range of sports. The Able Too Games provided the participants with many sporting activities to try throughout the day such as boccia, goalball, football, aerobics, badminton, swimming and many more (14 in total). The day ended with a presentation by the Mayor of East Staffordshire Cllr Liz Staples alongside the Project Co-ordinator Liam Rooney where participants received a certificate, medal and cap as rewards for their achievements throughout the day.

The weekly dad's football sports activity has been up and running for approximately eight months. In the time this has been going, the attendance rate has been considerably high with dads of an average age of 25. The session consists of basic football drills, which include passing, ball control, heading and shooting and always start the sessions with a warm up and finish with a cool down.
Dad's have expressed that they are feeling fitter and healthier. Two dads have successfully gone on to take their football level 1 which provides them with basic football knowledge.
For weekly sessions to continue well into the future and dads to get as much experience as possible. There are plans to introduce a similar session that would involve young people, where the dad's that took there football level 1 could go on to coach the young people.

The aim was to try and engage with girls in the Burntwood area and use a sport that they may not normally have access to, to engage them within the Positive Futures project.
The girls undertook weekly riding lessons, which also included learning how to care for the horses and how to tack them up and how to groom them. The girls learnt how to mount and dismount the horses as well as walking, trotting and guiding the horses in certain directions and changing directions.
Six girls who were targeted as quite vulnerable attended a 12-week horse riding and stable management course. They attended a riding school every other week for six weeks to ride and learn about managing stables and caring for horses. On alternate weeks they would attend theory sessions on stable management. The riding sessions consisted of the girls learning the basics of riding, starting with them leading the horses, then progressing onto learning
to trott and eventually they all rode by themsleves.
The girls enjoyed the programme and passed the Level 1 Stable Management award for the British Horse Riding Society. A number of the girls have also considered the option of volunteering at the stables in exchange for continuing riding sessions. The sessions also boosted the girls confidence especially when they achieved something on their own. A number of the girls are now engaging in other
activity sessions, which are being run within the area.
The girls all gained a Stable Management certificate from the riding school and all thoroughly enjoyed the riding sessions. They now attend other Positive Futures sessions such as dance and the summer programme and are regular attendees at Youth Centre.

Due to the success of this course we have decided to run another riding course at the same stables through Spring 2009 term. Currently there are a number of girls who are not participating in many sessions attending and progressing well in the session.

The objective of this project was the to increase the number of BME groups taking part in Netball. The target area for the project was East Staffordshire and in particular Burton-on-Trent due to the high population of BME groups. The project involved delivering five weeks of taster sessions designed as 'Back to netball sessions' for the community to access. A central facility to the BME community was used to ensure easy accessibility and to provide an environment that is familiar and safe.
12 girls attended the five week programme with members form the local BME Community, although this number was not sustained over the full five week block. One member of the back to netball course is now a member of a local club, which participates in the Burton & District Netball League.
Backs to Netball Projects are extremely important to the national governing body, England Netball in their whole sport plan. These types of sessions help to increase adult participation rates and decrease higher education dropout rates.
It is also important that the participants of the East Staffordshire Back to Netball project now have the exit routes and contact details for netball in the local area. Ideally making the project self-sustainable so that participants can train and prepare before entering a league would be the best option. Discussions are being made with the Burton & District league to try and make this happen.

As badminton is not a Paralympics sport it was recognised that there was limited opportunities for young people with disabilities to take part in our sport both Nationally, Regionally and locally.
It was felt that with financial support we could facilitate Badminton opportunities to young people so that they could experience fun, social, casual and competitive activity with the reassurance and sustainability of their schools support.
We had a number of L2 qualified coaches in the area that has experience in delivering Badminton to young people with disabilities.
We invited 5 Special Schools from across Newcastle, Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Moorlands to take part in 6-8 weeks of Bisi Badminton activity. This was delivered by our workforce within the school environment for 1 hour per week. There was a mixture of this happening both before and after the competitive Bisi festival.
A central Bisi Badminton festival was hosted where each school that has received coaching had the opportunity to enter a team to compete. The activities consisted of fundamental activities related to Badminton. We used specialised / adapted equipment to support the young people's experience.
The winning school received a Bisi Badminton equipment bag to ensure that the activity could continue once the coach stepped out. There was informal discussions between schools regarding the sharing of this equipment.

The Access funding has helped us contribute towards the growth and development of girls rugby throughout the county. Our school development programme has helped create the following tournaments:
County Y7 Girls School Tournament held at Walton High School, Stafford.
County Y8, 9, 10 Girls Schools Tournament held at Lichfield RFC, Lichfield.
County Y10 & 11 Girls Tournament held at Stafford RFC.
We have also helped contribute to signing 8 formal club-school agreements which have helped to establish strong formal links from schools to clubs.
Furthermore the programme has helped strengthen the mentoring system that we have in place for club and county coaches. We now have a motivated and skilled coaching workforce leading the County age groups, along with 1 coach who went on to coach the West Midlands Regional Team.
We have continued to offer developmental support to the established girls sections (U15 & U18) at Burton & Lichfield and Stafford RFC. We also have a growing interest at a number of other clubs across the county including Essington, Newcastle, Walsall and Tamworth. Encouraging signs are developing in the North of Staffordshire where 4 local Mini and Junior clubs have combined together to put the foundations in place to create a new girls section, North Staffordshire Sirens. The club have linked together to sign post girls that are within their current set up to the new team. This will help to consolidate playing numbers, and allow for regular fixtures to be played. This is an exciting prospect and if this proves successful it is something that we would like to replicate elsewhere in the county.

The club had identified some additional capacity amongst the members that would allow for delivery within and immediately after curriculum time. It also identified that whilst the men and junior men's side of the club was flourishing there was an opportunity to begin to attract the next generation of females players to the club.
KS3 was targeted because girls of this age had not previously experienced volleyball and it was felt there was a greater opportunity for sustainability of the project beyond the initial impact.
Five local schools were targeted with KS3 girls at each receiving weekly volleyball coaching during after school activity clubs. The coaching was geared towards an end of project tournament that was hosted at the club base at Madeley High School. All of the schools and girls who took part were invited to attend and it gave them an opportunity to experience the environment created by Newcastle (Staffs) VC and to promote a transition from the initial activity into the club beyond the end of the project.

The Access Funding Scheme has enabled there to be made available evening cricket coaching on a weekly basis for 16 girls aged 10 to14 from several schools in North Staffordshire.
All girls attended regularly and 6 girls went on to attend further coaching at cricket clubs in North Staffordshire during the Summer. Two of those girls have been recommended for County trials and will be invited to attend the Staffordshire u/11 girls winter training sessions in 2009.
The Academy has started again this Winter and will continue until April 2009.There are 22 girls attending this time from 8 different schools within North Staffordshire.

The funding has allowed regular coaching sessions to now take place at the Chase Leisure Centre every Thursday (term time) 3.30 - 5.00 p.m. These sessions are supported by two fully qualified Level Two Football Coaches. Some of the funding was also used to buy additional equipment and for Coach development.
The young people involved in the club are currently putting together a bid for funding from the Staffordshire Youth Service (Youth Bank). If successful, the money will be used to further develop the club.

The money that ACCESS Across Staffordshire kindly gave us was used in order to purchase disability equipment in order to make Blackfriars Day Centre weekly sports session sustainable. The money was used to purchase hockey equipment, basketball equipment, dodge ball equipment, rounders equipment, bibs, cones, etc. The staff members at Blackfriars day centre had already been trained in sports leaders award level 2 and the Wallace centre where we partake in the sport has given us an extremely generous discount therefore the activities are running smoothly every Thursday.
Staff members at Blackfriars day centre have stated that they have noticed differences in confidence, self esteem and motivation of a number of clients at the day centre. They also look forward to their weekly sports session and have a lot of fun each week. Two of the young people who are now too old to attend the centre, attend the session as volunteers every Thursday. Eighteen young people achieved the Duke of Edinburgh access credit for physical recreation for
participating in 13 weeks of structured and sport and 21 young people achievement the Stoke-on-Trent youth award; Be Healthy. Strathmore special college and Kemball special School have also been using the equipment.
We would like more disability groups to use the equipment. We have told the contact at English Disability Federation about the equipment and have informed all the local disability schools and organisations about the equipment.
