Workshop Descriptions

The descriptions below outline the different topics which are covered during each of the workshops included on our current programme. We are also able to provide other workshops from sports coach UK and runningsports. Safeguarding and Protecting Children (formerly Good Practice & Child Protection)

Protect yourself, the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and following good coaching practice. Learn about child abuse and how to handle situations if you have concerns. 

This workshop will help you, the coach to:

  • identify good coaching practice to promote a positive relationship with children
  • identify sport situations and coaching practice that might constitute either poor practice or possible abuse
  • identify ways of dealing with your own feelings about child abuse and state what constitutes neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse
  • recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse and appreciate why reporting it is often so difficult
  • identity appropriate action if a child discloses he/she has been abused
  • identity appropriate action if abuse is suspected and explain the role and responsibilities of other experts (e.g. police, social services)
  • describe appropriate practice that reduces the likelihood of abuse occurring.

There are a maximum of 20 places available for this course.

Equity in your Coaching

Everyone should have access to sport, regardless of gender, age, race, ability, faith or sexual orientation. As a coach, you have an important role to play in ensuring this happens. The workshop will help you to apply and extend your existing skills to meet the needs of present and potential participants. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to:

  • explain what sports equity means and why it is important
  • identify barriers to participation
  • use appropriate language and terminology
  • identify and challenge inequitable behaviour
  • interpret the legal framework that affects coaching
  • identify how they can become more equitable
  • establish where to go for further information

This course is designed to be attended by sports coaches.  The tutor will use coaching examples to help coaches understand how they, as a coach in their coaching practice, should be equitable in their language and actions towards different people.

This course shares similar introductory material to the "A Club for All" workshop and it is important that the same person doesn't attend both courses.

Coaching Disabled Performers

Develop your own coaching knowledge and skills to coach disabled players through inclusive and separate coaching sessions. Discover new ways to adapt equipment and identify appropriate safety and medical considerations to meet your players' needs.

This workshop will help you, the coach to:

  • explain when integration and segregation might be most appropriate
  • identify appropriate safety and medical considerations
  • review and extend your knowledge of how to adapt your coaching to the specific needs of disabled performers
  • design and monitor a programme for a disabled player taking part in their sport
  • direct players to appropriate structures for competition and further coaching.
Managing Behaviour in Sport

This new sports coach UK workshop will help coaches better understand why challenging behaviour occurs in sport.  This workshop will support coaches by identifying a range of practical ideas to deal with unwanted behaviour in sport and coaching environments. Helping coaches to recognise what creates a positive coaching environment and actions that will encourage acceptable behaviour is key to the outcomes of this workshop.

This workshop is primarily designed for Level 1 or Level 2 coaches.  The scenarios, DVD footage and role-plays are set in the context to support all coaches who work with children and young people. 

By the end of the workshop, coaches will be able to:

  • identify good coaching practice that supports positive behaviour
  • identify the range of challenging behaviours coaches need to deal with
  • recognise personal values and attitudes towards behaviour and discipline
  • explore reasons for positive and challenging behaviours
  • identify strategies for managing behaviour
  • develop techniques for self-management, including steps to take in difficult situations.
An Introduction to Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)

This theorybased workshop is aimed at coaches to enable them to understand the key concepts of LTAD and what it means to them and their practice. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to:

Identify and recognise the reasons for adopting LTAD

  • Identify and recognise the concepts and key principles of LTAD
  • Recognise and respond to the implication for coaches and coaching
  • Identify appropriate action to integrate LTAD into their coaching 
The FUNdamentals of Movement

This practical workshop explores the concepts of Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and speed. It compliments other coach education resources which may focus on the movement skills of running, hopping, skipping etc. This workshop assists coaches to observe, analyse and coach good movement patterns within their sessions whether multi skill or sport specific. By the end of this workshop coaches should be familiar with the following concepts:

  • Agility - dynamic stability, starting and stopping, momentum, acceleration, rhythm
  • Balance - establishing a stable core, static stability, exploring centre gravity and base of support
  • Coordination - related to disassociating body parts and the coordination of explosive actions including jumping, throwing, striking and kicking

Multi-skill Clubs in Practice

This practical workshop is designed to help participants integrate the ABC,s into Multi-skill Club sessions. It will give delegates the opportunity to develop ideas with others and share good practice.  By the end of this workshop delegates will be able to:

  • Devise and explain appropriate and effective practices for Agility, Balance and Co-ordination.
  • Show different practices and assessment opportunities for Agility, Balance and Co-ordination.
  • Examine different ways in which the ABC's and FUNdamental Sport Skills can be integrated within sessions.
  • Evaluate different session formats in which the ABC's and FUNdamental Sport Skills could be used
  • Explain how Multi-skill Clubs will operate and their place within player pathways for young people.

This workshop is for coaches or teachers who are multi-skill trained or of an equivalent background.  Delegates must have attended The FUNdamentals of Movement workshop and have achieved at least a Level 2 coaching qualification.

Creating a Safe Coaching Environment

In our current climate providing a safe coaching environment for coaching is essential, it requires that all those working within the coaching industry must review their own practice on a regular basis. This workshop provides coaches with a practical guide to health and safety and risk management in coaching to ensure a safe coaching environment for all participants.  By the end of this workshop coaches should be able to:

  • identify the foundations of good practice risk management in coaching
  • recognise and challenge poor health and safety practices
  • identify appropriate action to take if a lack of health and safety is apparent in an area, facility or activity
  • advise performers, parents and guardians about the perceived and actual risks present in the sports in which they are involved
  • recognise the roles and responsibilities of other agencies and organisations
  • understand the relationship between hazard and risk in a coaching context
  • identify specific hazards to which coaches are exposed
  • identify specific action that coaches can take to reduce the likelihood and/or frequency of unacceptable risk

Develop Your Coaching workshop from sports coach UK

** This course is aimed at coaches or teachers who are multi-skill trained or of an equivalent background.  Delegates must have attended The FUNdamentals of Movement workshop and have achieved at least a Level 2 coaching qualification. 
 


runningsports

runningsports workshops are a valuable tool for Club Development. They have been designed to help sports clubs and volunteers to run their clubs as effectively as possible.

Club for All

This workshop outlines how your club can benefit from reaching all members of the com-munity, and explains how to reach out to them- young people, older people, those on low incomes, disabled people and people from ethnic minorities.  By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • explain what "sports equity" means
  • list the benefits of sports equity for their sports club or organisation
  • identify equitable and inequitable practice
  • identify key equity challenges for their sports club or organisation
  • identify the steps they may need to take in their own club or organisation to start a basic action plan for equity
  • identify the organisations that can help them and provide further guidance on sports equity.

This course is designed to be attended by volunteers in a club, (possibly a club member, member of the committee or the volunteer co-ordincator).  The tutor will use club management and administration examples to help the volunteer/club member understand the benefits of opening up their club to the wider community and being equitable in their membership and club practices.

This course shares similar introductory material to the "Equity in your Coaching" workshop and it is important that the same person doesn't attend both courses

Funding for your Club

This workshop provides practical ideas for raising funds from a range of sources, including grants, fund-raising events and sponsorship.  At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • develop a project mindful of the national agenda for sport and the funding opportunities available
  • identify the barriers to successful funding applications
  • identify sources of funding, including grants, sponsorship and general fund-raising
  • assess whether the Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) scheme or having Charitable status could be potential sources of additional revenue
  • identify the information required to develop a funding plan
  • describe ways of evaluating the effectiveness of their project.

If you would like to attend a workshop which is not currently part of our workshop programme, please contact us and we will either attempt to hold the workshop for you (depending on numbers) or we will find out where the nearest workshop is being held is. Alternatively, you can search the sports coach UK website or runningsports websites.

First Aid

RLSS - Cricket First Aid

This is a 3 hour, Cricket specific Emergency Aid course. The course will only cover cricket First Aid specifics and will not be applicable to other sports as a First Aid certificate.

The course will provide you with knowledge of how to deal with potential life threatening injuries and teach you how to deal with a variety of situations which may occur on the cricket pitch.

There are a maximum 20 places available for this course (dependant on venue).

RLSS - Community Life Support

This is a general 3 hour Emergency Aid course, that will provide you with the knowledge of how to deal with potential life threatening injuries and teach you how to deal with a variety of situations.

Please check with your sport specific Governing Body to ensure that they will recognise this certificate for coaching and Clubmark purposes.

There are a maximum 20 places available for this course (dependant on venue).

St John Ambulance - 6 Hour Appointed Person

This is a 6 hour, Appointed Persons course, delivered by St John Ambulance. Please check with your sport specific Governing Body to ensure that they will recognise this certificate for coaching and Clubmark purposes.

The workshop will be run over 2 evenings, or as a full-day session, and will teach you basic lifesaving First Aid and relevant regulations,
 
Course content:

  • Insight into Health & Safety Regulations
  • Managing an incident
  • Priorities of First Aid
  • Resuscitation
  • Blood loss
  • Treatment of unconscious casualty
  • Treatment of shock
  • Treatment of heart attack
  • General discussion on common workplace injuries

There are a maximum of 12 places available for this course

Heart Start Training

This is a nationally recognised course with training provided by St. John Ambulance personnel and a certificate of attendance awarded on completion.  This course is designed to equip participants with basic First Aid / CPR techniques and is not an in depth First Aid course.

Places are limited to 12 participants on a first come -first served basis for those registering on the Volunteer Walk Leader Training course. 

 

Other Coach Development Workshops

Coach Development in Disadvantaged Communities

These are the proposed workshop outcomes for this workshop, however these will be tailored to the requirements of the delegates and are subject to change.


1. Building Safer and Stronger Communities
2. Tackling anti-social behaviour and the disadvantaged
3. Health and Obesity amongst the young
4. Increase individuals employability
5. Raise the participation level in Sport and Physical Activity


Autism and Sport

An introduction to Autistic Spectrum Disorders. To include the difference between Autism and Asperger syndrome, common myths and stereotypes, prevalence rates, causes. We will then look at the triad of impairments and sensory sensitivity. To conclude, we will briefly consider communication strategies and ways of working with young people with ASD.
 
There are a maximum of 20 places available for this course.

Skillbase

This project aims to provide affordable, accessible training, meeting the needs of the voluntary and community sector, however the workshops are open to all including private and public organisations.

There are a wide variety of training workshops including IT skills, Negotiating Skills, Basic Health and Safety, Volunteer Management skills, training for committee members and trustees, Time management and Conflict awareness.

Volunteer Walk Leader Training

This training is part of the National Walking the Way to Health Initiative and is a nationally recognised training course, with a certificate awarded on completion

Both evenings must be attended to successfully complete the course.  This course is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to participate in leading and back-marking Health Walks and to set up Health Walks independently / with the support of the Walking for Health Co-ordinator.  Course content includes how: 

  • To ensure that any walk carried out is mapped out and risk assessed properly.
  • To ensure that each walk is suitable for the ability of individuals within the walking group.
  • To lead the walks in the manner specified at the Volunteer Walk Leader training including making new participants welcome.
  • To inform participants of health messages where appropriate.
  • To ensure that a register of attendance is completed at each walk and to make sure that each new walker has completed a health walk questionnaire.

Continuing support is provided through:

  • Quarterly Volunteer Walk Leader meetings (with free refreshments), where you will get the chance to ask questions, share your views and get ideas from other volunteers. This is organised by the Walking for Health Co-ordinator who acts as a local contact and is available for information, advice or assistance on any aspect of walk leading.


What we expect from Volunteers:

  • To commit to leading or back marking at least 6 walks within the first year following training, if at all feasible. (This could be within Stafford or in your local area.)
  • To attend quarterly Volunteer Walk Leader meetings whenever possible.
  • To let a suitable contact know, well in advance, if you are unable to lead a walk, in order to allow time for a replacement to be found.

Places limited to 15 on a first come - first served basis.
