Safeguarding and Protecting Children Level 1
3 hour duration

Protect yourself, the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and following good coaching practice. Learn how to recognise signs of child abuse and how to handle situations sensitively and effectively if you have any concerns. 

This workshop will help you as the Coach:

  • identify good coaching practice to promote a positive relationship with children
  • identify sport situations and coaching practice that might constitute either poor practice or possible abuse
  • identify ways of dealing with your own feelings about child abuse and state what constitutes neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse
  • recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse and appreciate why reporting it is often so difficult
  • identity appropriate action if a child discloses he/she has been abused
  • identity appropriate action if abuse is suspected and explain the role and responsibilities of other experts (e.g. police, social services)
  • describe appropriate practice that reduces the likelihood of abuse occurring.

Please note: Due to the sensitive nature of this workshop we have been advised by the course organisers that people under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

Reflect and Practice Level 2
(Safeguarding and Protecting Children)
3 hour duration

Safeguarding and Protecting Children level 2: reflecting on practice is aimed at coaches and those working with children and young people in sport. The workshop acknowledges and values the experience coaches have gained since the last workshop and builds on the knowledge and insight gained from Safeguarding and Protecting Children.

Safeguarding and Protecting Children 2: reflecting on practice will:

  • reinforce your understanding of safeguarding and child protection
  • consolidate your learning from the first workshop through examining practical experience
  • reflect upon experience, identifying and sharing good practice
  • explore approaches to challenging issues and situations.

Equity in Your Coaching
3 hour duration

Everyone should have access to sport, regardless of gender, age, race, ability, faith or sexual orientation. As a coach, you have an important role to play in ensuring this happens. The workshop will help you to apply and extend your existing skills to meet the needs of present and potential participants. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to:

  • explain what sports equity means and why it is important
  • identify barriers to participation
  • use appropriate language and terminology
  • identify and challenge inequitable behaviour
  • interpret the legal framework that affects coaching
  • identify how they can become more equitable
  • establish where to go for further information

This course is designed to be attended by sports coaches.  The tutor will use coaching examples to help coaches understand how they, as a coach in their coaching practice, should be equitable in their language and actions towards different people.

This course shares similar introductory material to the "A Club for All" workshop and it is important that the same person doesn't attend both courses.

Coaching Disabled Performers
3 hour duration

Develop your own coaching knowledge and skills to coach disabled players through inclusive and separate coaching sessions. Discover new ways to adapt equipment and identify appropriate safety and medical considerations to meet your players' needs.

This workshop will help you, the coach to:

  • explain when integration and segregation might be most appropriate
  • identify appropriate safety and medical considerations
  • review and extend your knowledge of how to adapt your coaching to the specific needs of disabled performers
  • design and monitor a programme for a disabled player taking part in their sport
  • direct players to appropriate structures for competition and further coaching.

Positive Behaviour Management in Sport
3 hour duration

This new sports coach UK workshop will help coaches better understand why challenging behaviour occurs in sport.  This workshop will support coaches by identifying a range of practical ideas to deal with behaviour in sport and coaching environments in a positive light. Helping coaches to recognise what creates a positive coaching environment and actions that will encourage acceptable behaviour is key to the outcomes of this workshop.

This workshop is primarily designed for Level 1 or Level 2 coaches.  The scenarios, DVD footage and role-plays are set in the context to support all coaches who work with children and young people. 

By the end of the workshop, coaches will be able to:

  • identify good coaching practice that supports positive behaviour
  • identify the range of challenging behaviours coaches need to deal with
  • recognise personal values and attitudes towards behaviour and discipline
  • explore reasons for positive and challenging behaviours
  • identify strategies for managing behaviour
  • develop techniques for self-management, including steps to take in difficult situations.

An Introduction to Long Term Athlete Development  (LTAD)

3 hour duration

 

This theory based workshop is aimed at coaches to enable them to understand the key concepts of LTAD and what it means to them and their practice. By the end of this workshop coaches will be able to:

Identify and recognise the reasons for adopting LTAD

  • Identify and recognise the concepts and key principles of LTAD
  • Recognise and respond to the implication for coaches and coaching
  • Identify appropriate action to integrate LTAD into their coaching

An Introuction to the FUNdamentals of Movement

3 hour duration

 

This practical based workshop is aimed at coaches that have an understanding of Long Term Athlete Development or be familiar with the LTAD player pathways in their chosen sport.  It explores the concepts of Balance, Agility, Coordination and speed (ABCs) helping coaches to develop their observational and analytical skills whilst introducing them to good movement patterns within either sport specific or multi skill environment.

The ABCs that Make a Difference

FUNdamentals of Agility, Balance and Coordination - All Practical

Three separate workshops build that on the knowledge previously gained from 'An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement'.  Each workshop looks in detail at the individual components of agility, balance and coordination.

FUNdamentals of Agility
3 hour duration
- starting, stopping, changing direction, rotation, reaction and complex movements.  The ability to rapidly change the body's position efficiently and effectively requiring a combination of balance and coordination.  The workshop builds on knowledge gained fron attendance on "An Introduction to the FUNdametals of Movement" workshop.  Aimed at coaches / teachers who have reached at least UKCC Level 2.

FUNdamentals of Balance
3 hour duration
- height of centre of gravity, centre and base, losing balance, extending the base, positioning the centre of gravity, counterbalance and moving forces.  Balance is the ability to maintain the centre of gravity of a body within the base of support.  Keeping balance requires the intergration of inputs from mutiple senses, i.e. sight, tough and hearing.  This workshop will help to provide pratcical solutions to accelerate its development within children. Aimed at coaches / teachers who have reached at least UKCC Level 2.

FUNdamentals of Coordination
3 hour duration
- organising limbs, generating force, differentiating force, speed and accuracy and interception.  Coordination is the ability to execute a movement smoothly and accurately.  This involves the senses, sight, touch and hearing, with muscular contactions and joint movements - from walking to throwing and catching.  Aimed at coaches / teachers who have reached at least UKCC Level 2.  A recommendation for this workshop, is to have attended,

  • "An Introduction to Long Term Athelete Development

  • "An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement"

  • "FUNdamentals of Coordination"     

scukMulti-skill Clubs in Practice

3 hour duration

This practical workshop is designed to help participants integrate the ABC,s into Multi-skill Club sessions. It will give delegates the opportunity to develop ideas with others and share good practice.  By the end of this workshop delegates will be able to:

  • Devise and explain appropriate and effective practices for Agility, Balance and Co-ordination.
  • Show different practices and assessment opportunities for Agility, Balance and Co-ordination.
  • Examine different ways in which the ABC's and FUNdamental Sport Skills can be integrated within sessions.
  • Evaluate different session formats in which the ABC's and FUNdamental Sport Skills could be used
  • Explain how Multi-skill Clubs will operate and their place within player pathways for young people.

This workshop is for coaches or teachers who are multi-skill trained or of an equivalent background.  Delegates must have attended The FUNdamentals of Movement workshop and have achieved at least a Level 2 coaching qualification.

Designed to help sports clubs and volunteers to run their clubs as effectively as possible.

A Club for All
3 hour duration

This workshop outlines how your club can benefit from reaching all members of the

community, and explains how to reach out to them- young people, older people, those on low incomes, disabled people and people from ethnic minorities.  By the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • explain what "sports equity" means
  • list the benefits of sports equity for their sports club or organisation
  • identify equitable and inequitable practice
  • identify key equity challenges for their sports club or organisation
  • identify the steps they may need to take in their own club or organisation to start a basic action plan for equity
  • identify the organisations that can help them and provide further guidance on sports equity.

This course is designed to be attended by volunteers in a club, (possibly a club member, member of the committee or the volunteer co-ordincator).  The tutor will use club management and administration examples to help the volunteer/club member understand the benefits of opening up their club to the wider community and being equitable in their membership and club practices.

This course shares similar introductory material to the "Equity in your Coaching" workshop and it is important that the same person does not attend both courses.

The Role of The Volunteer Coordinator

3 hour duration

 

Clubs will benefit greatly from having a volunteer coordinator - a single contact who supports their volunteers, knows them all by name and what each of them do in the Club.

 

This workshop will teach volunteers exactly what the volunteer co-ordinator role should encompass and help them to become an even greater asset to their club by attending this workshop.

 

By participating in this workshop you will be able to:

  • Understand the role of the volunteer coordinator
  • Know how to interpret a club development plan and its volunteering implications
  • Learn how best to recruit and retain volunteers and recognise and reward them
  • Know how to access local, regional and national programmes to support the implementation of a volunteer action plan.
  • Being prepared to take on the role of club volunteer coordinator will help participants to play a crucial part in the future of their sports club

    Funding For Your Club
    3 hour duration 

    This workshop provides practical ideas for raising funds from a range of sources, including grants, fund-raising events and sponsorship.  At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

    • develop a project mindful of the national agenda for sport and the funding opportunities available
    • identify the barriers to successful funding applications
    • identify sources of funding, including grants, sponsorship and general fund-raising
    • assess whether the Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) scheme or having Charitable status could be potential sources of additional revenue
    • identify the information required to develop a funding plan
    • describe ways of evaluating the effectiveness of their project.

    First Aid
    3 hour duration

     

    This is a general 3 hour Emergency Aid course, that will provide you with the knowledge of how to deal with potential life threatening injuries and teach you how to deal with a variety of situations.

    Please check with your sport specific Governing Body to ensure that they will recognise this certificate for coaching and Clubmark purposes.

     

      

     

     St Johns

    St John Ambulance - 6 Hour Appointed Person
    6 hour duration 

    This is a 6 hour, Appointed Persons course, delivered by St John Ambulance. Please check with your sport specific Governing Body to ensure that they will recognise this certificate for coaching and Clubmark purposes.

    The workshop will be run over 2 evenings, or as a full-day session, and will teach you basic lifesaving First Aid and relevant regulations,
     
    Course content:

    • Insight into Health & Safety Regulations
    • Managing an incident
    • Priorities of First Aid
    • Resuscitation
    • Blood loss
    • Treatment of unconscious casualty
    • Treatment of shock
    • Treatment of heart attack
    • General discussion on common workplace injuries

    There are a maximum of 12 places available for this course.

    Sports Funding & Grants
    3 hour duration

     

    This is a practical workshop on grants and funding aimed at those who are in Sports Club

    who are in the process of pursuing grant applications for the development of the Club and its members.

     

    • A 3 hour workshop which will cover the following topics:
    • An overview of different grant aid opportunities
    • Hint and tips on how to prepare a high quality grant application
    • Advice given on the supporting information required in the application
    • How to build a strong case for funding sports related projects and evidencing need
    • Use of model applications and successful case studies

    Tasks will also include areas where individuals can work on their own project ideas

    There may be some scope for one to one advice given to each club, but this will depend on the numbers ion the workshop.  The tutor will advise on the day of the workshop.

    Please note that attendance on the scuk / running sports and Firts Aid workshops will  Accredit you with a 3 Year Certficate.  This is processed after the event by sports Coach uk, using the details you provide to the Tutor on the actual workshop session.  This is normally sent to your home address 6-8 weeks after the workshop.  If you do not receive the certificate during this time and / or require some form of attendance for Club mark, please contact sports coach uk on 0845 601 3054.  SASSOT, is able to produce a letter of attendance if you so wish.  For First Aid workshops via the RLSS, you will receive the certificate on the evening of the workshop.

  • Autism and Sport

    An introduction to Autistic Spectrum Disorders. To include the difference between Autism and Asperger syndrome, common myths and stereotypes, prevalence rates, causes. We will then look at the triad of impairments and sensory sensitivity.
