National Lottery awards South Staffordshire PCT over £200,000 | ||
South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) will use the £239,399 from Sport England's Regional Sports Board (RSB) to develop the 'Health Fit' physical activity programme.
The scheme, being developed with a wide range of local partners, will increase the physical activity levels of adults identified with health risks and contribute to improved health and well-being.
'Health Fit' is focused on the most deprived areas of South Staffordshire, targeting adults with health risks including obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol.
People with health risks will be referred to a Health Trainer. The Trainer will provide motivational and behavioural support to enable the patient to make healthier lifestyle choices which could involve increasing physical activity, stopping smoking, healthy eating and losing weight.
Judith Wright, Director of Public Health said: "The funds from the National Lottery will support us to develop - in partnership with local authorities in South Staffordshire - a range of opportunities for people to participate in sport and active recreation to increase their physical activity levels.
In South Staffordshire only one in five adults do the recommended 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity, five times a week.
Mark Thornewill, Director, Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent said: "We are delighted to hear of the award. The Partnership supported the PCT in developing their application for 'Health Fit', which we feel will make a fundamental contribution towards us achieving increasingly active, healthy and successful communities across the area."

Rawlett Community Sports College was successful in their application to the Big Lottery Fund along with four other School Sports Partnerships within the West Midlands who recieved a total of £835,560 to get young people physically active.
The projects will particularly target young people that need extra encouragement to participate in sports, including those with special needs.
The funding comes from the Big Lottery Fund's £74.2 million Out of School Hours Learning: School Sports Co-ordinators programme that helps to establish partnerships to offer extra curriculum sport and physical activities to improve health, motivate, build self-esteem and increase social skills of young people. Today's funding package across England totals £4,898,171.
John Taylor, Big Lottery Fund Head of West Midlands region, said: "This lottery funding is essential in helping provide a better lifestyle for young people across the West Midlands by encouraging them to participate in a variety of worthwhile physical activities. Not only are the benefits health related, but they also encourage social skills and build confidence and self-esteem, hopefully all of which will reflect in the classroom and not just on the sports field."

Nick Hunt (Head of PE) was really happy about the event as he felt the night was an "excellent end to a very positive year and allowed all students to be recognised for the achievements and efforts they have made over the previous 12 months".
The night was ended with a presentation and speech from Olympic athlete Karen Pickering who gave a motivational message to the students based around the theme of hard work, stating that through showing courage and determination to be the best that you can, you will achieve the rewards you deserve. 2008's event is already being planned when it is hoped that even more students from Rawlett will be celebrating individual and team successes with their work in performance sport, volunteering and leadership and local community coaching. |
