County Sports Partnership Update
Refresh of the Staffordshire Local Area Agreement NI 8 - 16+ participation in sport and physical activity
The Staffordshire NI 8 Delivery Group is in the process of refreshing the Delivery Plan which sets out how Partners are working to increase participation in sport and physical activity.
The plan focuses on 5 local authority areas: Cannock, Newcastle-under-Lyme, South Staffordshire, Staffordshire Moorlands and Tamworth, but will also reference work across the other district and boroughs.
We will be incorporating as much detail on delivery initiatives as possible and we wish to include references to the increasing delivery by national governing bodies of sport across the Staffordshire area.
Any Partners who will be delivering major schemes aimed at impacting on increasing 16+ participation are very welcome to complete the template and forward the details to me.

Community Amateur Sports Club
Minister for Sport urges thousands more sports clubs to register for tax benefits and share in a multi-million pound windfall.
Thousands of amateur sports clubs across the UK are missing out on a share of tax savings running into millions of pounds, Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe stated.
Sutcliffe wants more clubs to join the Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) scheme so they will have more money to help drive a sporting legacy from 2012.
The rallying cry comes as Sutcliffe visited various sports clubs that are registered with the CASC scheme that has, according to figures produced by Deloitte, resulted in over £60 million worth of tax savings for sports clubs in the last seven years. There are over 5,500 clubs currently registered with the CASC scheme.
CASC legislation came in via the 2002 Finance Act and enables amateur sports clubs that meet certain criteria to qualify for a number of tax advantages. These include:
Clubs eligible are those that encourage participation in a qualifying sport, are open to the whole community, without discrimination, and ensure profits go back into the club, benefitting sport.
Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe said: “It is great that we have signed up more than 5,500 clubs to the Community Amateur Sports Club scheme and that many sports clubs are reaping the benefits it brings. But there are thousands of clubs out there that are missing out.”
“Sports clubs will play a crucial role in helping us reach our goal of getting 2 million people more active by 2013. Being part of the scheme means that clubs will have more funds at their disposal to help increase participation.”
CCPR’s (Central Council of Physical Recreation) Chair Brigid Simmonds said:“Thanks to the CASC scheme, thousands of sports clubs have received a boost from the taxman; in fact over £60 million has been saved by the 5,500 clubs already registered. Through registering as a CASC, clubs can keep the money they have raised in the community. That means it can be re-invested in kit, in coaching and in facilities - all for the good of local sport.
“In these difficult financial times, CCPR is urging sports clubs to take advantage of this great opportunity to maximise every penny and through the cascinfo website, they can find out how.”
Nick Jacobs, senior manager in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, said: “The advantages of the CASC scheme are clear. The tax savings allow clubs to invest in better facilities which in turn should encourage more young people to take up sport.
Taking advantage of the existing tax benefits for community sport is the first crucial step towards nurturing our sporting abilities and enhancing the nation’s future sporting potential.”
The registration process is simple and can take a matter of weeks. Please click on the following web link for further information and details on how to apply;

Staffordshire Cricket News
Threat to continued investment in Cricket in Staffordshire
Staffordshire Cricket and Staffordshire County Cricket Club have today written to local MPs to express our joint concern at the threat to continued investment in cricket in Staffordshire. A consultation currently being held by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport into sporting events which should be listed could mean an income loss to cricket in England and Wales of at least £100m during a four year period. With loses of this magnitude the impact would be felt at all levels of the game.
Increased investment at all levels of cricket has generated impressive results with year on year increases in participation, focus clubs, volunteers and coaches in Staffordshire. Added to this at a national level the Men's, Women's and Disability teams have won their respective Ashes, and last year the England Women's team won the ICC Women’s World Cup and the ICC Women’s World Twenty20.
Staffordshire Cricket’s ability to make significant investments in the grassroots and community cricket in the county and establish a successful performance pathway from schools and clubs through to the county teams and on to the England set up has been in large part due to the fact that ECB has been able to negotiate a fair market price for cricket with a broadcaster who have demonstrated a desire and commitment to our sport. Accepting recommendations by the Davies review to list the home Ashes Test Series and the subsequent loss of income to the ECB and ourselves would have a disastrous impact on our ability to support and develop cricket in Staffordshire.
Gerald Williams, Chair of the Staffordshire Cricket Board, commented: “During the 12 months to September 2008, Staffordshire Cricket saw continued increases in key areas of improvement for its 55 focus clubs; participation in the game of cricket increased by 5%; the number of clubs achieving Clubmark accreditation increased by 8%, club membership went up by 13% and volunteer roles increased by 19%.”
Mr Williams continued: “The period from October 2008 to September 2009 saw that growth consolidated with a 30% increase in participation to over 14,500 participants; a 37% increase in Clubmarked clubs; a 17% increase in club membership with nearly 7,000 members of focus clubs; 30% and 28% increases in coaching and volunteer roles respectively. We are very concerned that the Davies Report proposal could seriously affect the grassroots, and recreational game within our county and undo the good work that cricket has been working hard to sustain.”
Staffordshire Cricket has already committed to short term improvement targets in 2010 including increasing the number of Clubmark accredited clubs from 51 to 55, running a total of 13 Chance-2-Shine programmes within over 120 schools and increasing number of school teams taking part in cricket competition to well over 300.
Jason Britton, Cricket Development Manager for the county, said: “Staffordshire Cricket runs 15 youth cricket teams for both boys and girls for county and district levels at age ranges from under-9 to under-17 catering for over 620 junior cricketers at representative level as well as a senior Women’s team; in addition Staffordshire County Cricket Club has a long established reputation as one of the premier non-first class county teams.”
Britton continued, “In the last six years Staffordshire Cricket has seen 20 of its young cricketers progress to first class county academies and contracts, with no less than four of our ranks representing England during the last two seasons. We continue to support a sustainable cricket workforce with a comprehensive Coach Education Programme. The last three years has seen over 500 coaches educated to ECB levels I, II and III with a coach tutor workforce of 14 being upskilled to support the safe and structured delivery of cricket in the county. The Davies proposal seriously jeopardises all elements of grassroots cricket provision and ongoing development of the recreational game.”
David Collier, ECB chief executive, said: "We are extremely concerned that should the government choose to accept the recommendations in the Davies review the entire structure of the game in this country could be undermined. Cricket is currently thriving across the country with more coaches, improved stadia, cricket returning to state schools through the Chance to Shine programme and world class support structures for the men's, women's and disabled teams. A loss of income of at least £100m over four years would have a devastating impact on our ability to maintain and improve cricket in this country and we would urge the Government to consider these wider implications before making any decisions."
Over the coming period Staffordshire Cricket will be working with stakeholders to ensure that the future of cricket in Staffordshire is protected and we are hopeful that the Government will consider returning to the current arrangement which allows quality coverage of cricket on paid for and free to air media platforms and ensures a level of investment to support and improve cricket in Staffordshire.

A cricket club with no boundaries
Aston Cricket Club in Stone was only formed in September 2009 but already is pushing the very boundaries in local cricket, in fact you could say that they have no boundaries. Formed by a number of friends, coaches, managers and parents who strongly believe that the individual rights of their young members are more important that the club itself, have carried this ethos into 2010 and are planning a very comprehensive coaching and playing structure for their first ever season.
So far they have formed not just a club but a coaching academy and a playing structure with an incredible 10 teams; included in that structure is 3 girls teams and a women’s team as well. These teams have been formed directly due to the interest shown by their members.
Not satisfied in building a comprehensive playing structure Aston Cricket Club have formed a link with The NSPCC who are now their chosen charity; this link will see the new club regularly organising fund raising events and we believe that no other club in Staffordshire has this link.
Other initiatives for the new season will see the formation of a Special Needs Coaching Group and the launch of a Club School Link which will see Aston’s Coaches working with local primary school children.
Chairman Kevin Langdown says that: "We started in last September with a blank piece of paper and had a bit of an idea of what we wanted but we decided to allow our members decide the direction not our committee, and the structure is a product of their views and decisions. Therefore we can build the club that our members want, without doubt Aston Cricket Club is a club without boundaries.

News from Staffordshire FA
Futsal fever hits Staffordshire schools
Secondary Schools all across Staffordshire have spent the winter months embracing the exciting version of small-sided football that is ‘Futsal’, which resulted in district competitions taking place for students in Year 7, with the winners going on to represent their School Sports Partnership at the County Finals organised by the Staffordshire Football Association.
With Futsal being a fairly new concept to many schools, the Staffordshire FA organised two ‘Beginners Guide to Futsal’ courses in November/December for secondary school teachers across Staffordshire to come along and learn more about this format of the game, to enable the teachers to then deliver Futsal to the students back at their respective schools.
Schools competing at the County Futsal Finals in Cannock
Working in partnership with the County FA, the five SSP ‘Competition Managers’ in Staffordshire, organised and delivered local competitions for girls and boys in Year 7 in their respective secondary schools. Teams representing their schools competed against each other, and the winners of each competition went forward to represent their SSP at the County Finals. The local competitions were refereed by young leaders from within the School Sports Partnerships.
On the 4th and 11th February respectively, the girls' & boys' County Finals took place at the Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock, under the guidance of Staffordshire FA officials and qualified Futsal referees from within the County. Both competitions were played to an extremely high standard, with excellent sportsmanship shown throughout by the participating schools.
In the girls' competition, St. Joseph’s High School from the South Stoke SSP were victorious, and in the boys' competition, Kind Edward VI High School from the Stafford & Stone SSP came out on top. Both schools will now go on to represent Staffordshire at The FA’s Regional/National Futsal Competition later in the year.
King Edward VI High School from the Stafford & Stone SSP, celebrate winning the
Football Development Officer, Gareth Thomas, commented on the project; “Working in partnership with the five Competition Managers, we wanted to give all Secondary Schools in Staffordshire the opportunity of learning more about the game of Futsal, and also provide them with exciting exit routes in the form of District, County, Regional and National Futsal Competitions. The FA believe that Futsal can make a contribution to the technical development of young players, and many countries that we admire for the technical skills of their players use Futsal as an aspect of youth development. Ball retention, quick & skilful play, and tactical awareness, are all key skills within the game of Futsal”.
He added; “The district competitions organised by the Competition Mangers proved to be an excellent opportunity for boys & girls in Year 7 to develop these skills, and it was great to see how much the children seemed to enjoy this format of the game. We hope that their teachers have also enjoyed delivering Futsal within their respective schools during this initiative, and we’ll certainly look to repeat the success of these competitions by working in partnership with the Competition Managers again in the future”.

Further playing opportunities for Female Disabled Footballers
Staffordshire FA has been able to support running a Girls 4 v 4 Special Schools League at the Powerleague, Stoke. The Idea is to get more females playing football in a comfortable environment whilst realising the challenges of schools making 7-aside teams.
The Staffordshire FA’s 4v4 Special Schools Girls League holds 5 rounds of fixtures in which teams take part, last year the league produced an opportunity for approx 35 girls to play football in an environment where they feel more comfortable as there were no male intimidations. The league has provided a lot of enjoyment for the players, excitement for the spectators, plenty of quality football and goals galore in previous years!
The league is open to all special schools at each fixture date to allow more girls to participate throughout the months.
After the positive response received from players, supporters and teachers alike we are planning to run the Girls 4v4 League annually which will hopefully increase the number of female participation in Disability Football, whether it’s refereeing, administering or playing and offering further opportunities on the FA’s Disability Player Pathway
If you are a female wanting to get involved in Disability Football or you require more information please contact Jamie Leaning on 01785 256994, 07800619884 or jamie.leaning@staffordshirefa.com

Staffordshire FA’s Disability Centre
The Staffordshire FA’s Disability Centre of Excellence played their second round of fixtures on Sunday 7th February, both the under 17’s and under 14’s squad gained valuable experience and increased their personal development further by playing against other Centres from the midlands.
The Staffordshire FA’s Disability Centre of Excellence u17 and u14 travelled to Judgemeadow Community Centre, Leicestershire for the second East and West Midlands C of E fixture date. Each squad played 4 games throughout the day, 2 against Birmingham FA and 2 against Leicestershire & Rutland FA.
Both squads did themselves, their coaches and the travelling parent support proud as they competed to the best of their ability in each and every game. Each team listened to their coach’s advice and tactics and brought into practice what they had learnt in their training sessions which in turn helped them play some very entertaining football against strong opposition.
The Centre of Excellence is still recruiting players and is also looking for coaches (minimum Level 2) to work at the centre, if you know of anybody that may be interested please contact the Staffordshire FA’s disability coach Jamie Leaning on 01785 256994 (option 2 then 5), 07800619884 or jamie.leaning@staffordshirefa.com
The squad would like to thank Leicestershire FA for hosting the fixtures and supplying the referees and they would also like to thank Happy Days Coaches for transporting them to and from the fixtures.

Champions honoured at RYA award ceremonies
Another Award for Andy as Stone World Champ is honoured by region
Stone sailing World Champion Andy Bridgman added another award to his increasingly crammed trophy cabinet on 4th February as he received a special honour from the RYA West Midlands in recognition for being named a 2009 RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year.
Having received his RYA West Midlands Regional Young Sailor of the Year accolade from Skandia Team GBR star and three-time Olympic champion sailor Ben Ainslie at the London International Boat Show last month, Andy returned to the more familiar surrounds of Blithfield Sailing Club in Abbots Bromley where RYA West Midlands Regional Chairman Bob Holmes presented him with a special trophy from the region.
Andrew Bridgman receives his RYA West Midlands award from RYA West Midlands Regional Chairman
The 15-year-old Alleyne's High School pupil shot to prominence last summer as he was crowned Topper class World Champion in Austria. The Topper junior class is the boat in which Beijing 2008 Laser champion Paul Goodison started his career.
Bob Holmes said: “We felt very strongly that Andy’s achievements should also be recognised by the RYA West Midlands region and we’re delighted to present him with this award. Andy has a tremendous focus and is a great young role model for young sailors throughout the West Midlands who want to do well in their racing.”
Andy, who started sailing after his dad Stephen took him and his older sister Amy to Blithfield to try out the sport, added: “I want to try to take this as far as I can. I just love sailing and there’s no better feeling than when you’re halfway through a race and you know you are sailing well and doing everything you can to win.
“I’m very grateful to the RYA West Midlands for this award and want to say a special thank you to my parents who are my biggest supporters and take me all over the country every weekend for training and competitions. I’m also very grateful to Andy Felthouse and everyone at Blithfield for helping me.”
As a member of the RYA’s National Junior Squad programme, Andy has access to the RYA’s highly-subsidised World Class National Training Programme designed to help Britain’s top young sailors achieve future international success. He has also received support from Solihull-based Merry Marine, the Stone Festival, Stafford Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council.
In April, Andy will compete at the Laser 4.7 World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand before sitting his GCSE exams this summer.

De Ferrers young stars make it to regional finals
After providing over half of the County Schools Team Table Tennis Championships winning sides, Burton schools sent 4 of those on to the Zonal finals held at Bradford, competing against Derbyshire & South, West & North Yorkshire. De Ferrers Technical College had 3 of those with entries in the girls & boys under 13’s and the boys under 19’s. William Shrewsbury Primary School was also in action in the boys under 11’s.
The De Ferrers under 13 boys had a tough draw in the group having to play favourites Crossley Heath from Halifax. Despite some close games they went down 6-2. Undeterred, they bounced back against Kingstone School, Barnsley, with Joe Byrne, Andrew Heathcote & Liam Burt all unbeaten and Liam Calendar-Welch adding the final game for a 7-1 win. Confidence now began to show and their next opponents, Highfields School, Matlock, were brushed aside 6-2, again with Joe, Andrew & Liam B taking the points. This meant a semi final game against the winner from the other group, St.Mary’s College, Hull. Joe got things off to a good start winning the first game but losses for Andrew & Liam C-W put De Ferrers on the back foot. But that was the last game St. Mary’s got close in, as Liam B made it 2-2 then Joe, Andrew & Liam B reeled off the next 3 games to go into the final. With both finalists qualifying for the Regional finals it was just pride at stake now in a rematch with Crossley Heath and a scoreline of 3-5 was so nearly 4-4 as Joe was just edged out 12-10 in the 5th by Crossley’s number one.
Still an improvement on the first game and now thoughts turn to the Regional finals at Blackburn at the end of February, the first time the under 13 boys have made it this far.
Not to be outdone, the under 13 girls also made it through to Blackburn in dramatic fashion. Their deciding game came against Bradford Grammar where an early 3-1 lead, after wins by Bekki Lycett, Milly Bowering & Holly Webster, was reduced to a 4-3 deficit with Holly’s final game to play. Although never more than 2 points in each game, Holly scored the points that mattered to win all 3 games 11-9 and bring the tie level. A nervous wait then ensued as countback was used to determine their fate. With Bekki & Milly both winning 3-0 and losing 3-1 this put the girls 2 games ahead. Holly’s 3-0 & 3-2 wins meant that Sophie Richardson needed just a single game in her results to edge the team home and as she had taken a game in both her matches the girls edged home by 2 games and joined the boys in the Regional finals.
William Shrewsbury were looking to emulate last year’s efforts of qualifying for the next stage but were immediately up against it after a 5-3 loss to South Yorkshire qualifiers Dore Primary School. This left them having to beat Lees Primary, Keighley for a semi final spot. Will Pearson lead the team from the front, taking his 2 games but everyone mucked in as Lewis Acton, Dan Styne & Nick Purslow all won 1 each for a 5-3 victory. This put them up against the very strong Dronfield Primary from Derbyshire and despite a good win for Will against Dronfield’s top player this was where their journey ended as they went down 5-1. James Ward led the De Ferrers under 19 boys well remaining unbeaten in his 3 games. But despite an early 5-3 win against Bradford Grammar, there were no other successes as a 3rd place finish saw the team miss out on qualification by one place.

Schools compete for victory
Schools dig, set and spike their way to victory
Newcastle under Lyme School Sport Partnership (SSP) held their first ever under 15 boys and under 15 girls 4v4 indoor volleyball competition in late January 2010.
Schools from across Newcastle under Lyme SSP were invited to take part in an indoor 4v4 competition run at Madeley High School. The school is one of the bases of Newcastle Staffs Volleyball Club and the event utilised one of the club's training nights to run a schools competition.
St John Fisher, Clayton, Wolstanton, CCSC and a number of squads from Madeley High School took part in the event. The event was organised and ran through the SSP and Newcastle’s Community Development coach Ant Viggars.
The event ran from 4-6pm utilising the whole four courts that the school could offer and resulted in an exciting, fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable event.
In the boys' event the winners were Madeley A and runners up were Madeley B and in the girl's event the winners were St John Fisher with Wolstanton coming a close second.
These four squads will now face teams from Blythe Bridge and Painsley in the County final to be held in March.
We are very fortunate in Newcastle, not only to have a full time volleyball coach supporting our schools and clubs, but also to have such an established and strong club in Newcastle Staffs Volleyball Club. To be able to link a schools' event at the main training base of the club and even on the same night they train, really provides these young people with a clear exit route for volleyball. Many of the young people will have been experiencing their first taste of competitive volleyball; we hope they enjoyed it and looking forward to seeing them at the outdoor 4v4 event held in May.

Stafford and Stone Schools begin virtual challenge
Over the next 6 months two middle and seven high schools will take part in three separate virtual challenges: Crazy Catch, Batak and Indoor Rowing which will be organised by the Stafford and Stone School Sport Partnership.
The Partnership have introduced virtual challenges for schools to have the opportunity to compete against one another without travelling.
Three alternative challenges will be introduced to two middle and seven high schools from January to June.
Every school will participate in Crazy Catch, Batak and Indoor Rowing.
The first school to take part in the challenge was Walton Priory Middle School in Stone, where 244 pupils took part in the Batak and 132 in the Crazy Catch over the past month. Help was at hand from year 8 sports leaders who officiated and collected the results.
Results will be collated fortnightly and pupils will be able to compare their progress against other schools.
Competition Manager, Nick Richards said: “Pupils have the opportunity to challenge other schools without travelling and to take part in alternative competitions.”

Burntwood and Lichfield School Sport Partnership's Young Leaders take the lead
Year 10 leaders who signed up to the Youth Sport Trust Step into Sport programme have a busy 2010!
During January and February Burntwood & Lichfield School Sport Partnership Leaders have been heavily involved in volunteering and learning new skills to help their development as Young Leaders.
The first event of 2010 was a High 5 Netball Festival. A number of primary schools from local clusters had their first competitive games of High 5 Netball hosted by Chasetown Specialist Sports College and run by Young Leaders.
This was a new activity for the schools and the Leaders but the students were able to demonstrate good netball skills and learned to adjust to the rules of the game and the Year 10 leaders soon grew in confidence and acted as very competent assistant umpires.
At the second event more students from Chasetown Specialist Sports College led an Indoor Athletics Pentathlon event for pupils at Chasetown Community School. The children aged 6-9 were given demonstrations and coached by the Young Leaders and were then judged and scored by them.
And finally earlier in February more Young Leaders arrived at Springhill Primary School to a very warm welcome from the Year 1 and 2 pupils who were participating in a Multi Skills Challenge which consisted of tests of agility, accuracy, coordination, speed and strength. The leaders organised, judged and scored the event which was a great success for both the students and leaders.
The Leaders have all logged their hours onto the Youth Sport Trust website Step Into Sport Programme and will continue to be offered opportunities to begin and sustain an involvement in leadership in sport and volunteering.

Volunteer gets gold & news of skipping festival
Third Gold Volunteer Award
Catherine Davis of Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community High School became the third South Staffordshire School Sport Partnership (SSP) student to register 200 hours Volunteering and Leadership on the YST Step into Sport passport.
Catherine joins two students from the Great Wyrley Performing Arts High School who have achieved 200 hours of volunteering in their Community Clubs. Aiden Bolas and Steven Foster, who are in Year 13 at Great Wyrley were presented with their Gold Awards for active sports volunteering at the school’s annual prize giving earlier in the school year. Steven has been helping with local football club Wyrley Juniors and Aiden with Cannock Phoenix Swimming Club. Both students are determined to continue volunteering at every opportunity and push towards their 400 hours or Double Gold Award. Steven has also scooped the Staffordshire FA’s Football Workforce, Young Person Award for the season 2008-2009. Catherine has achieved her 200 hour Gold Award through School based volunteering in her own school, and in Primary School Festivals and Tournaments. Catherine has also completed over 80 hours volunteering in her local Community Club, helping with the Football Academy at Wyrley Juniors. She was also selected to attend the Staffordshire FA Volunteer Camp at Uttoxeter and the Regional Volunteer Camp at Walsall FC last summer. Their Awards are highly regarded, showing dedication and a willingness to go out of their way to help others and they are a credit to themselves, their clubs and their schools.
South Staffordshire SSP
On Wednesday 27th January, 125 year 1 pupils from 4 local primary schools converged on Cheslyn Hay Sport & Community High School Sports Hall to enjoy a morning of skipping and fruit tasting.
The Skipping Festival is an annual event which brings every year 1 pupil from the Cheslyn Hay family of Primary Schools to one venue to skip. The event was supported by 18 Sports Leaders from Cheslyn Hay Sport and Community HS who were instrumental in encouraging and supporting the youngsters during the morning. These year 10 students were outstanding in their patience and hard work with the year 1 pupils. They led a general warm up before Judy Ganecki from the British Heart Foundation “Jump rope for Heart” team began the skipping warm up followed by a basic skipping session. After a fruit tasting break, the youngsters were encouraged to build on their basic skills by adding a number of increasingly difficult tasks. Some of the youngsters found moving on difficult but a large number could complete some of the stunts with a few reaching a very high standard by the end of the Festival.
In preparation for the Festival, SSCo Eric Field had visited each school to do a taster session and teachers at all the schools reported a massive uptake in skipping at lunchtimes and breaks afterwards. “It is amazing how quickly the youngsters pick skipping up even if they have done very little before and they soon moved on to ‘social skipping’ in pairs and small groups.”
Thanks to Judy Ganecki, the Leaders, the teachers and classroom assistants the youngsters had a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile 2010
On Sunday 21st March 2010, East Staffordshire Borough Council will ‘rise to the challenge’ and will hold its 3rd Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile 2010 in aid of Sport Relief.
The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile 2010 will take place at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton upon Trent, from 12.00pm – 4pm (First race is set to commence at 12.30). It is open to people of all ages and abilities.
A wide range of fun filled activities will also be available on the day, so not only will the day be a fantastic opportunity to raise money for Sport Relief, but will also be an exciting day out for the whole family. There will be other fun activities on the day such as face painters, the use of the onsite activities including a children’s play area, Skate Park, tennis courts, mini golf and an outdoor basketball court.
By getting involved in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile 2010 you will be raising money to help change the lives of people all over the world. Half of the money raised will stay in the United Kingdom to offer children and adults around the country the possibility of living a better life and giving them a brighter future. The other half of the money will go to some of the world’s poorest countries where they face extreme poverty and with the reality of abuse and exploitation.
To make a difference, people will be asked to ‘rise to the challenge’ and run, walk, stagger or crawl one, three or six miles for Sport Relief. People can pledge their support by entering online at www.sportrelief.com. Forms can also be collected at branches of Sainsbury’s, GP surgery’s, Burton Town Hall, East Staffordshire Leisure Centres, Burton Hospital and local gyms across the town.
If anybody would be interested in volunteering to help out on the day or for more information please contact Alex Britton on sportsdevelopment@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk or 07854138331/01283 505910.
Able Too United
The Able Too Forum, a voluntary community organisation, co-ordinates various sport and physical activities for all people with disabilities.
One of their main projects is to organise our Able Too United Disability Football Coaching Centre, which is based at Shobnall Leisure Complex on a Thursday evening. The sessions run from 5:15pm – 6:15pm for 5 – 13 year olds, and 6:30pm – 8:00pm for 14+ and adults. There is a small charge of £1.50 per session.
From this, Able Too United play on the last Sunday every month, throughout the season, in the Staffordshire Ability Counts League, competing against teams from premiership and football league clubs, for example, Stoke City and Port Vale.
All the players fully enjoy the social interaction during training and look forward to representing Able Too United on match days.
The purpose of the visit to the Burton Albion v Port Vale match, stems from the FA’s ‘one game, one community’ week a couple of months ago. Where Able Too United were invited by the Port Vale Deaf team to take a tour of Vale Park and a short ten minute match at half time, during the match between Port Vale v Cheltenham Town.
Our players asked if we could return the generous hospitality of Port Vale, so we approached Burton Albion to see if we could come along and watch a game. As a result the majority of the Able Too United players and also some of the team from Port Vale Deaf F.C went along on Saturday 2 February.
The photo below shows the day of ‘one game, one community’ at Port Vale, both teams having a photo at the end of a training session with the Port Vale Coaches.
Should anyone wish to attend the Able Too United Disability Coaching Centre or require further information, please contact Neil Brown on (01283) 505914.

Competition and activities on offer across the borough
Girls and Boys Have A Ball
The Sports Development Team at Stafford Borough Council recently held a High 5’s netball tournament for primary school teams from across the borough. Teams were made up of girls and boys from school years 5 & 6 and the winners and runners up will now represent the borough at a county competition.
More than 80 girls and boys from schools across Stafford Borough took part in an annual netball tournament.
Stafford Prep School saw off twelve rivals to win the ‘High 5s’ netball tournament and will now represent the borough in a county-wide competition next month.
The competition was organised by the borough council and took place at Walton High School in Stafford on Thursday 4th February. Competitors aged between 9 and 11 years old battled it out with Stafford Prep School beating St Anne’s Catholic Primary 6-3 in the final.
High 5’s netball is an adapted version of the seven a side game, designed to get primary school children playing netball. Unlike the older version the players rotate positions and non-playing members of the squad also take officiating roles – for example time-keeping or scoring.
Kath Fenn, sports development officer from the borough council, said: “The standard was very high and all the youngsters had a great time. This form of netball is a way of keeping all the children involved in the game and gives them an excellent grounding for when they move up to the seven a side version.”
For more information on getting involved in netball within the borough please contact Kath on kfenn@staffordbc.gov.uk or 01785 619515.

Mobile Skate Park proves once again popular in Stafford
February half term once again saw the mobile skate park going out and about within the borough, and proving more popular than ever!
The Sports Development team took the mobile skate park to Doxey, Rowley Park, Flash Lea and Stone during the five days of half term. Around 35 youngsters used the park at each venue, most finding the locations very convenient to get to and from their homes.
Two sessions ran each day and the young people showed that they have a huge amount of talent not just on there skate boards, but on their bikes as well.
An indoor football coaching course also ran during February Half Term, which is something new to the Sports Development activity programme. With the weather being so cold and frosty, we decided to try an indoor football coaching session at Stafford Leisure Centre, which proved popular with all those involved. The three-day course was aimed at the 8-12 age group and was designed more around skill development than game play due to the nature of the indoor venue.
With Easter fast approaching we will also have a whole host of activities available for the school holidays. Activities will include Startrack Athletics, Football Coaching, the Mobile Skate Park and a whole lot more. Information on the Easter programme will be available on our website, www.staffordbc.gov.uk/sportsdevelopment in late March.

More recent decades the City’s Potters ‘Arf (Half Marathon, 13.1 miles/21km) attracts 2,000 participants and the inclusion of a shorter 10km (6.25mile) can act as a stepping stone to the Half Marathon event 2 weeks later. The main sponsor is Staffordshire University who will be designing and constructing the key trophies for the event and will also over-see the filming to record this historical sporting event. The launch for the event took place on Monday 8th February 2010 at Stoke Town Hall and the introduction of the Roy Fowler Memorial Trophy which will go to the first U-16 runner in the 2km fun run. Roy Fowler was a famous local distance runner from Leek who won the World Cross-country Title in 1963. Roy was a key character on the local running scene during the 1960s & 70s and continued to coach juniors for Staffordshire Moorlands Athletic Club until his unfortunate death last year.

For the Record - Olympics Legacy Project
Running alongside the four-year Olympics preparation is the Cultural Olympiad which also dates back to the Ancient Olympics. In response to this, Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service wants to work with local sports organisations and individuals to record and preserve their Olympic legacies for posterity.
The first is a form for you to complete giving a brief history of your club, whether new or old and regardless of its size or level. It consists of a basic list of questions, with a chance for you to fill in other information if you wish, and perhaps send in a photograph. The Archive Service is aiming to accumulate as many of these histories as possible from clubs and other organisations or individuals across the County and City. This will ensure that we leave a permanent record of what was happening in Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent in the years up to 2012, and your club can be represented in this record.
The second is a survey of any records held at your club. These could be fixture lists, competition records, certificates, newsletters or photographs, or perhaps more formal records of meetings and memberships. The Archive Service will be glad to give advice about the long-term preservation of these items, or to take in any formal club records for permanent safe-keeping and to make these available for people to use.
These surveys can be sent out by post or email. There is an ongoing programme to send out as many as possible, but if you wish to supply contact details, they can be sent out straightaway. Please contact liz.street@staffordshire.gov.uk for the County or chris.latimer@stoke.gov.uk for the City.
Please help us to record and preserve Staffordshire & Stoke on Trent's sporting history and heritage.
